Welcome can be explored from different perspectives through its green spaces and local history. For your stay, these offer two concrete points of reference: a neighborhood park in the Welcome community and historical connections to the landscape, transportation, church, and school. These topics relate to different aspects of the area; placing them in chronological context helps distinguish them.

Parks and Green Spaces

Welcome Park is a neighborhood park in the Welcome community on the west side of Greenville County. This description identifies both the character of the park and its connection to the community. If you would like to include a green space in your orientation to the area alongside its historical topics, the park is a concrete point of reference.

In 2019, a playground and a picnic shelter were listed for Welcome Neighborhood Park in the area. If you are taking these amenities into account when planning, check on them before setting out.

Landscape and Transportation Routes

The Welcome area was once part of the then-unexplored foothills of the Carolinas. Forests, wildlife, and natural paths shaped the area; Indigenous travelers used these paths. The landscape connection thus encompasses both the features of nature and Indigenous travelers’ use of natural paths.

A historic ridge road became an important transportation route and later came to be known as White Horse Road. The term “ridge road” describes a road along a ridge. Settlers, wagons, and stagecoaches used the route. This helps place in chronological context the development from a road to an important transportation route and its later name, White Horse Road.

According to local tradition, an inn built along the route gave White Horse Road its name; the reason was a popular white horse. This explanation is explicitly part of local legend. The history of the transportation route and the story about the inn and horse thus offer different answers: one describes how the road was used, while the other explains its name.

Church and School History

Welcome Baptist Church was founded in 1875; it built its current building in 1960. The dates mark two different milestones: the founding of the church and the construction of its current building. In July 2024, the united congregations and their leadership met at the historic Welcome Baptist campus under the name Palmetto Baptist Church. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting options in advance.

Welcome High School is also part of the area’s history. In 1946, it was the third-largest school in Greenville; the building no longer stands. The school connection is therefore historical and refers to a former institution, not a school building that still exists today.

The dates refer to different things: 1875 marks the founding of the church, 1960 the construction of its current building, 1946 the school’s size at the time, and July 2024 a gathering of the united congregations. This distinction helps you read the area’s history as a sequence of different events rather than interpreting all the details as descriptions of the same point in time.
