Discover Loris: Festivals, Nature, and History
Accommodation in Loris
If you’re looking for a hotel in Loris, you can plan your trip around the themes that shape the town: festivals, local history, and nature. Two events are each held on a Saturday; the Loris Nature Park and the historic downtown offer additional reasons to visit.
Festivals in April and October
The Great Loris Bog-Off Festival takes place every year on the third Saturday in October. At its heart is a cooking competition for Chicken Bog. The dish consists of chicken, rice, sausage, and spices—a direct culinary link to the festival’s name. The program also includes two stages with live entertainment, a classic car show, and more than 100 arts and crafts booths. The entertainment program and number of booths may vary from one edition to the next.
The Small Town, Big Show Festival is held on the third Saturday in April. It features judged classes for cars, trucks, tractors, and motorcycles; vehicle classes may vary from one edition to the next. The two events therefore differ both in month and focus: Chicken Bog takes center stage in October, while April features judged vehicle classes. Check the event dates before your trip.
History and downtown
In the late 19th century, Loris was the center of a major railway depot and also an agricultural hub. Since 1887, the Loris Historical Society has worked to preserve the history of Loris and its immediate surroundings. This historical perspective helps put the local importance of agriculture into context, which continues to feature in how the town is presented today.
A street clock and carillon system was added to the central business district as part of a redesign. Another reminder of the area’s agricultural history is the Loris, S.C. Mural in downtown Loris. Artist Tommy Simpson created the mural to celebrate the region’s agriculture. Together, these two features point to different aspects of local history: the development of the business district and the importance of agriculture.
Wetlands and nature watching
At Loris Nature Park, trails lead into wetlands where visitors can observe plants and small animals. Those interested in nature watching will find a different focus here from the town’s events and historical sites. The park also has a disc golf course. Nature watching and disc golf offer two different ways to experience the park.
Plan your visit and hotel choice
Barn View Winery is open Wednesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; reservations are not required. Because these are specific operating hours, it’s a good idea to check them before your visit. This choice gives your plans direction without requiring every visit to follow the same itinerary.
