North Myrtle Beach offers several highlights when planning a trip: nine miles of beach, natural areas at Cherry Grove Marsh and Carolina Shag. When looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. Should the coast be the main attraction, are you interested in walking trails and marshland, or would you like to combine your trip with a dance event? The locations differ in their landscapes and activities, giving the destination several distinct facets.

Beach and Carolina Shag

The beach stretches for nine miles and defines the coastal character of North Myrtle Beach. For travelers who focus primarily on the coast when choosing a destination, this is an important point of reference. Carolina Shag is also part of the town’s cultural identity: North Myrtle Beach is considered the birthplace of this dance. The National Shag Dance Championships are held here every year. If the championships are a reason for your trip, check the event dates against your travel dates before booking.

Walking Trails and Marshland

Heritage Shores Nature Preserve was established in 2007. Its walking trails cover seven acres. The preserve is located on an island that extends into Cherry Grove Marsh. At Ingram Dunes Nature Preserve, the focus is on a single trail: the half-mile interpretive nature trail is marked with signs. These measurements answer different planning questions. At Heritage Shores, the area covered by the walking trails is given in acres, while at Ingram Dunes, the length of the trail is given in miles. When comparing the two places, keep area and trail length separate rather than treating them as equivalent measurements.

The differences between the nature areas are also apparent beyond their measurements: at Heritage Shores, the island location and marshland are part of the setting; Ingram Dunes offers a signposted interpretive trail. Russell Burgess Coastal Preserve adds another feature: a scenic view of Cherry Grove Marsh. A boardwalk was added there in 2009 to preserve the marsh habitat. Each place therefore has a different focus: walking trails, an interpretive trail, or views and habitat preservation.

Boat Access and Parking

Cherry Grove Park & Boat Ramp offers a different focus. It is a fishing spot at Cherry Grove Marsh; by boat, access leads through Hog Inlet to the marshland and the Atlantic Ocean. This gives you two specific planning details: fishing is located at the marsh, while the boat access names two destinations reached via the passage. This distinguishes the site from the trails and viewpoints mentioned above and helps you tell a water-based activity apart from a walk.

McLean Park offers another point of reference for its size: the park covers ten acres and has a two-acre lake. The figures refer to different parts of the site—the park’s total area and the size of the lake. Comparing them helps you distinguish the park area from the water area rather than treating them as two equivalent measurements of the park.
