Deadwood, South Dakota, is a historic Gold Rush town and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1961. Museums, an old cemetery, and the George S. Mickelson Trail offer different ways to spend your time. When choosing a hotel, consider its actual location in relation to the part of town you want to explore; the catalog path uses a spelling in another language, but the destination is called Deadwood.

Gold Rush and Museums

The last great Gold Rush in the continental United States shaped Deadwood. W. E. Adams founded the Adams Museum in 1930 to preserve the history of the Black Hills. On display there is Potato Creek Johnny’s gold nugget, weighing 7.346 troy ounces. The Days of ’76 Museum grew out of a collection of wagons, stagecoaches, clothing, and memorabilia related to the festival of the same name. Days of ’76 is an annual event featuring a parade and rodeo; check the date and program for the relevant edition in advance. A restored depot on the Historic Main Street Urban Trail serves as a history and information center.

Cemetery and Trail

The Mount Moriah Cemetery Trail passes through a cemetery established in 1878, where around 3,400 people are buried. Visit respectfully; check current trail conditions and access. Deadwood is a starting or ending point for the George S. Mickelson Trail. About 2.5 miles lie within the city limits; there, the trail is used for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. This in-town distance is not the total length of the trail. Choose a section in advance and plan your return journey.

Choose a Hotel Location Based on Your Interests

A location convenient for museums and historic Main Street may be different from one suited to an early trail start. Compare actual hotel addresses, room conditions, prices, and availability. An offer in Deadwood does not guarantee proximity to every museum or direct access to the trail. A general list of lodges, vacation homes, and motels is no substitute for comparing specific hotels.

County: Lawrence County.
