Dell Rapids combines a historic focus along Main Street with a memorial park and summer recreation. If you’re looking for hotels in Dell Rapids, these different facets can help you shape your stay around your interests: architecture and local history offer a different focus than swimming or camping.

Historic District and Architectural History

The Dell Rapids Historic District includes 39 buildings along Main Street, the city’s main business area. The Grand Opera House is located within the district. This directly connects the historic group of buildings with the business street: the district offers a concentrated view of the cityscape, while other historical themes are reflected in individual institutions or memorial sites. Sioux Quartzite is also part of the local architectural history. Wallace Dow preferred this stone, which was quarried in Dell Rapids. This connection to the material adds the history of a locally quarried stone and a specific choice of building material to the story of the buildings. So, alongside the question of where historic buildings are concentrated, there is also the story of the material that played a role in the area’s history.

Remembrance and Local History

Dell Rapids Veterans Memorial Park focuses on something different from architectural history. Five large quartz stones each bear a large brass medallion representing one of the branches of the armed forces. The memorial encompasses eight theaters of war, from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. Three flagpoles represent the U.S. flag, the state flag, and the POW flag; a grassy area is surrounded by a walkway.

The Dell Rapids Museum works to preserve the rich history and heritage of Dell Rapids and the surrounding region. Its focus therefore extends beyond the city’s history alone. In 2017, the annual Cootie Days were held at Dell Rapids City Park, celebrating the festival’s 96th anniversary.

The historical themes differ in scope: the Historic District brings together a specific group of buildings along Main Street, while the museum’s mission also covers the surrounding region. Veterans Memorial Park focuses on military remembrance. This makes it possible to consider architectural history, regional heritage, and remembrance as distinct historical themes.

Summer Recreation and Camping

For those planning a summer stay, Dell Rapids City Pool offers a different focus. This popular summer destination has hours for public swimming, adult swimming, and family swimming. The schedule is seasonal and may vary; if swimming is important to your trip plans, check the dates in advance.

Camping is another distinct way to travel: the city-operated Dell Rapids Campground has 29 sites, with electric, water, and sewer hookups. It is located on the Big Sioux River, west of South Garfield Avenue in Dell Rapids, South Dakota. The campground has a shower house, a playground, picnic tables, and fire pits; it also provides access to a recreational trail with a pedestrian bridge over the Big Sioux River.
