Shannon County lies entirely within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and includes part of Badlands National Park. Its landscapes, historic sites, and art centers offer different focal points for a stay: from the South Unit prairie to exhibits on Lakota history and Indigenous art.

Prairie and Historic Sites

The South Unit of Badlands National Park encompasses mixed-grass prairies that provide habitat for numerous wildlife species. Visitors can drive on the roads around the South Unit, taking in the landscape and its role as a wildlife habitat as part of their nature experience.

Wounded Knee is also part of the county’s history. The site of the Wounded Knee Massacre is on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Shannon County, along Rural County Road 4 in Wounded Knee, South Dakota. The Wounded Knee National Historic Landmark is associated with the massacre. Wounded Knee is considered a turning point in the history of relations between Indigenous peoples and white people.

History from Different Perspectives

At the Oglala Lakota College Historical Center, photographs and artworks tell the story of the Oglala Lakota from the early 19th century through the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. This historical span connects a broader historical perspective with the specific historical significance of Wounded Knee. Visitors interested in history can explore it through images and artworks; the National Historic Landmark offers a different focus.

Another place to explore art and history is the Red Cloud Heritage Center on the campus of Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge. Its fine arts collection includes more than 2,000 paintings, drawings, and sculptures. The center also hosts the Red Cloud Indian Art Show every summer. The collection and annual exhibition offer two different points of entry: an overview of fine art and a recurring summer program.

Lakota Art and Cultural Offerings

The Čhatkú Arts Center has a collection of Indigenous art with nearly 13,000 works. Tours include a visit to the gallery and gift shop. The center thus combines its art collection with a guided tour of the gallery and shop. The horseback rides offered by Singing Horse Trading Post are a different kind of activity: the business specializes in high-quality Indigenous crafts and Lakota art and offers horseback rides on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Arrangements are required for the rides.

At the Pine Ridge Visitor Center, visitors can get information about travel and visiting the region; Lakota art and wildlife displays are also featured there. The White River Visitor Center is at the intersection of SD Highway 27 and BIA Highway 2. It is open seasonally, usually from May through October. Check opening dates before your trip if you plan to visit.

The sites have different focuses: Wounded Knee and the Historical Center offer a connection to history, the Red Cloud Indian Art Show and Čhatkú Arts Center put art at the center, while the South Unit showcases prairie and wildlife habitats. When looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which of these themes you want to shape your stay.
