Oak Ridge brings together several sides of the city: the history of the Manhattan Project, art and theater, and activities by the water and in nature. As you plan your trip, you can consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay—and then look for a hotel in Oak Ridge.

The history of the Manhattan Project from multiple perspectives

The Oak Ridge Visitor Center is a starting point for learning about the Manhattan Project National Historical Park in Oak Ridge. At the Oak Ridge History Museum, which opened in 2019, numerous exhibits tell the stories of the people in Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project. This means that, alongside the historic sites, the lives of the city’s residents are also in focus.

At the K-25 Overlook, a detailed timeline provides information about the K-25 facility. The K-25 History Center takes a different approach: the 7,500-square-foot facility features interactive exhibits and more than 250 original artifacts about the people who worked at the site, which was vital to the war effort. The New Hope Visitor Center at Y-12 houses a public information center about the history of the Y-12 plant, one of the Manhattan Project’s original uranium production facilities.

The American Museum of Science and Energy tells the story of scientific and technological advances in Oak Ridge since the early days of the Manhattan Project. Its interactive exhibits and programs also explain how the world and the universe work. The museum is also the starting point for bus tours to historic sites on the federal government’s Oak Ridge Reservation.

At the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge, the “Difficult Decisions” and “Manhattan Project” exhibits tell the story of Oak Ridge and display numerous artifacts from that era. The “World of Trains” area includes an interactive playroom with a replica diesel engine, as well as the large-scale Lloydstown HO-gauge model railroad.

Art and theater

The Oak Ridge Art Center is a private, nonprofit art museum and educational institution. Its permanent exhibition features works spanning more than 2,000 years, including pieces by regional and international artists. Admission to the galleries is free, and studio tours are also offered.

The Oak Ridge Playhouse is another cultural option. It has operated continuously since 1943 and presents a season of musicals, comedies, dramas, and children’s plays.

Waterfront trails and nature

Melton Lake Park lies on the eastern edge of Oak Ridge. A 5.6-mile greenway runs along the water, offering a route for walking, running, and cycling. The park is also considered one of the top 2,000-meter rowing courses in the United States. This makes it a place that combines a specific waterfront trail with an important role in the sport of rowing.

Oak Ridge’s greenways are designed as interconnected loops. They link natural corridors with parks, schools, and cultural centers. Haw Ridge is considered a place for cycling, hiking, and running, offering another focus alongside the museums and historical exhibits.

The UT Arboretum is a 250-acre research and educational facility. More than 2,500 native and exotic woody plant specimens represent 800 species, varieties, and cultivars. The arboretum typically receives more than 30,000 visitors each year. Its character combines woody plant collections with research and education.

Choose the focus of your stay

If you’re especially interested in the Manhattan Project, the offerings differ in perspective: exhibits tell the stories of the people in Oak Ridge, the K-25 Overlook focuses on a timeline, and the K-25 History Center features artifacts and interactive exhibits. For time outdoors, Melton Lake Park offers a designated waterfront greenway; art and theater enthusiasts can consider including the Art Center and the Playhouse in their plans. These thematic differences can help you get a sense of Oak Ridge as a destination before looking for a hotel for your stay.
