Parsons can be explored through several cultural themes: its history as a railroad town, a historical museum, art at the Parsons Centre, and theater. If you are planning a stay, you can organize these highlights according to whether you are interested in exhibitions, local history, or a performance. To search for hotels in Parsons, it helps to first identify the purpose of your trip and the theme that interests you most.

History and Exhibitions

The Parsons & Greater Area Historical Museum is located in the Parsons Cultural Life Center inside the Parsons Municipal Building, 535 Tennessee Avenue South. Exhibits cover, among other topics, Indigenous peoples, early settlers, occupations, and the railroad. They also include life along the Tennessee River, churches, schools, theater, and dinosaurs. The topics bring together a range of interests: they span peoples and occupations, transportation and community themes, and dinosaurs. You can choose a historical focus based on the questions that interest you most.

Parsons was founded as a railroad town in 1889. The last run of the “Pea Vine” took place on October 31, 1936. The two dates refer to different events: 1889 marks the founding of Parsons, while the later date marks the last run of the “Pea Vine.” Together, they provide two precisely dated historical reference points, without equating the events.

Art and Theater

At the Parsons Centre, the Parsons Cultural & Performing Arts Council sponsors art exhibitions and other events. Works by local artists Nina Jordan, Sherry Earnhart, Rebecca Duncan, and Grant Milam have been shown in the Centre’s art gallery. Individual exhibitions may change. If you are especially interested in local art, the gallery offers a distinct focus alongside the museum’s historical themes.

The Hangar Community Theater in Parsons was created by converting a previously vacant aircraft hangar into a community theater space. The new venue enabled the Rivertime Players to expand their season, including annual children’s theater activities. Specific productions may vary. If you choose a performance as the reason for your trip, check the specific date in advance.

Practical Information

The Shane Bridges Theatre at the Hangar Performing Arts Center has 237 seats, including five wheelchair-accessible seats. The Performing Arts Center is one mile from downtown Parsons; free parking is available at the theater. Distance and parking details may change if local conditions change. Tickets for performances can be purchased at the box office starting 60 minutes before each performance. As this ticket policy may change, check it before your visit.

Near Parsons, Beech Bend Park is located on the Tennessee River, five miles east of the city. The park is therefore outside Parsons and should be considered a separate nearby destination. If you include the city and its surroundings in your plans, keep in mind the distinction between a destination in Parsons and a nearby place on the river.
