Mountain Stadt offers several ways to shape your stay: musical heritage, regional art, a scenic driving route, and parks and activities in the mountain terrain. When planning your trip, you can choose between a downtown stroll, culture, and outdoor recreation, depending on your interests.

Music History and Cultural Heritage

The “Musical Heritage Mural Mile” is a walking tour through downtown Mountain Stadt. Along the route, 17 murals depict songs, musicians, or themes from Johnson County’s musical heritage. This lets you encounter the county’s music history through a range of images, rather than at just one stop.

The Johnson County Welcome Center houses a small history museum with original artifacts and photographs. It presents the region’s history, the rural culture of the Appalachians, and its long musical heritage. The Heritage Hall Theatre is also downtown, at Heritage Square. It is housed in an auditorium dating to around 1923, which reopened as a theater in September 2005.

Events are also part of this musical focus: Long Journey Home weekend ends with a traditional Sunday Singin’ at the Heritage Hall Theatre. On October 3 and 4, 2025, the Mountain City Fiddlers’ Convention celebrated its 100th anniversary there. These dates refer to the 2025 event.

Art and Creative Offerings

The Johnson County Center for the Arts showcases crafts, art, and products from the Appalachians made by local artists. The center also offers an extensive program of art classes; individual classes may vary. The offerings thus combine exhibitions and craft-related themes with opportunities to get creative.

A life-size bronze sculpture of Fiddlin’ Fred Price stands in Mountain Stadt. Another musical-themed piece is a mural honoring The Kody Norris Show, located at Food Country at 100 N Church Street in Mountain Stadt.

Routes and Outdoor Activities

Unlike the Mural Mile through downtown, “The Snake” is a driving route. It runs north from Mountain Stadt along Highway 421 through Cherokee National Forest and via Shady Valley to Holston Valley. The route is described as 33 miles long and also features 489 curves, three mountains, and a valley.

Doe Mountain Recreation Area is home to wild turkeys. The protected mountain terrain has trails for off-highway vehicles, mountain biking, hiking, and birdwatching. The listed activities range from motorized trails to nature observation and hiking.

At the DMRA Adventure Center, you can rent Polaris RZR 1000 side-by-sides and Polaris Slingshots. To use the archery range at Doe Mountain Recreation Area, you must check in at the Adventure Center and buy a day or annual pass.

Parks in Mountain Stadt

Ralph Stout Park has a pond and pleasant walking paths. John Cunningham Park is downtown and has pickleball courts and swimming facilities. Facility availability may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
