Thompson's Station: History, Parks and Culture
Accommodation in Thompson's Station
Thompson's Station offers a variety of starting points for planning your trip: railroad heritage, the history of the Battle of Thompson's Station, park trails, historic estates, and options for visits and events. If you're looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The places and activities below offer practical guidance.
Local History and Railroad Heritage
The first trains reached Thompson's Station in August 1855 and helped the town grow as a shipping center. The Town Caboose is linked to this history: it was installed in 1995, two years after work on the replica depot was completed. Later, the caboose was painted red and yellow, the colors of the L & N line (Louisville/Nashville), which originally ran on these tracks. The depot and caboose thus represent different stages of the area's railroad heritage.
Homestead Manor offers a window into a different period in history. The estate was built in 1819 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This places its history in a different timeframe from the later development of the railroad. Homestead Manor also offers visits to a café—an opportunity to pair a visit to the historic site with a stop at the café.
Trails and Battlefield History
In Preservation Park, miles of hiking trails extend to the Nutro Dog Park. Markers in the park commemorate the Battle of Thompson's Station. Visitor information and walking trails across the battlefield site provide insight into the history of the battle. Here, outdoor exercise and exploring a specific chapter of local history go hand in hand.
The Nutro Dog Park covers four acres and has separate areas for large and small dogs. Its entrance is signposted and visible from the intersection of Columbia Pike and Critz Lane. If you plan to visit this park, you'll also have a clear landmark to help you find your way. Heritage Park offers scenic trails; check current trail conditions before setting out.
Tastings, Tours and Leisure Activities
Company Distilling offers samples from its product portfolio and distillery tours at its tasting room in Thompson's Station. The distillery produces its spirits in the same building that local farmers once used to store grain before shipping it by rail. This brings modern production and historic agricultural use together at one location. Check current booking requirements for tastings or tours before you arrive.
For live music, FirstBank Amphitheater is an outdoor concert venue in Graystone Quarry in Thompson's Station. Events are open to all ages, though rules may vary by event. A paved, quarter-mile path leads from the grassy parking area to the venue. Since parking options may change, check them before your visit.
Sweet Tea Candle Co. offers a variety of ways to visit: the company offers private candle-pouring parties and Mahjong lessons. Two Mahjong rooms are available for playing. If you plan to take part in either activity, check availability in advance. Bear Creek Farm's farm store is located in West Thompson's Station. Since opening arrangements may change, it's also a good idea to check before visiting.
