Caldwell: Kolache Festival, Parks, and History
Accommodation in Caldwell
Caldwell offers several specific starting points for planning a stay: the Kolache Festival, historical themes, and sports facilities at Davidson Creek Park. Depending on whether you want to plan your visit around an event, local history, or recreation in the park, you can focus on different aspects.
Kolache Festival in September
Caldwell’s Kolache Festival takes place every year on the second Saturday in September. It celebrates the Czech heritage for which the area is known; tens of thousands of kolaches are sold at the festival. If you plan your trip specifically around the festival, check the date for the year you plan to travel.
History in Caldwell
Caldwell was designated a Texas Main Street City in January 2014. The Main Street program aims to preserve and revitalize Caldwell’s historic downtown district. The Thomas Kraitchar, Jr. House was built in 1891 for Thomas Kraitchar, Jr. (1870–1946).
The Burleson County Historical Museum is located on the first floor of the Burleson County Courthouse. It focuses on the county’s early settlement and history. Both its location in the courthouse and the region’s history are therefore central to the museum.
The Burleson County Czech Heritage Museum offers a different cultural focus. A 2004 Texas Historical Commission guide describes folk artifacts and a traditional Czech kitchen there. A report from July 2023 also mentions two 19th-century Czech hymnals on display. Exhibits may change; check what is currently on offer before visiting.
For the Caldwell Visitor Civic Center, a 2004 guide describes exhibits and a video about the city’s history. Check what is currently on offer and how to access it before your visit.
Sports and Parks
Davidson Creek Park has a disc golf course and two basketball courts. The two sports offer different ways to stay active: try your hand at disc golf on the course or use the basketball courts. As a general rule, the City of Caldwell’s parks are open and available for use seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, unless otherwise noted.
A visitor post published in July 2023 also mentions a splash pad at Davidson Creek Park. Facilities and seasonal operations may change. Check whether the splash pad is currently available before your visit.
Getting Around and More to Do in the County
Caldwell is located at the intersection of State Highways 21 and 36, providing a clear reference point for getting around by road. A historic milestone in transportation came in 1880, when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built its main line through Caldwell.
In Burleson County, Lake Somerville offers visitors opportunities for water sports, fishing, hunting, and boating. Activities and access may change. These options offer another perspective on recreation in the county, alongside Caldwell’s historic attractions and parks.
