The Carson County Square House Museum presents the history, natural history, and art of the Texas Panhandle. At the heart of its architectural history is the historic Square House: built in the 1880s using lumber hauled by ox-drawn wagons from Dodge City, Kansas. The origin and transport of the lumber are thus an integral part of the building’s history.

Museum Buildings and Architectural History

The Square House Museum complex includes 21 buildings, galleries, an outdoor diorama, and large outdoor objects. It ranges from historic buildings to outdoor exhibits and objects. The complex also includes the Pioneer Dugout, an exact replica of a Carson County half-dugout. It illustrates a type of construction distinct from a house built with hauled-in lumber.

Another architectural history is associated with Conway Community Church. The church building was completed in 1912 and hosted regular services until 1968. Former congregation members and local volunteers restored the church and moved it to the Square House Museum complex in 1991. The dates trace a transformation: from its completion, through the period of regular services, to its later restoration and relocation.

The Thomas Cree Homesite also tells the story of a building method that responded to different conditions. In 1888, Thomas Cree and his wife built an earth dugout on their land in the High Plains because lumber was unavailable. The site is also associated with a historic monument commemorating the first tree in the Panhandle. Governor John Connally dedicated the historic monument in 1963.

Settlement History in White Deer

According to the recorded accounts, the story of White Deer’s Polish settlers begins with their immigration in 1909. They immigrated in response to offers from the White Deer Land Company. Their journey first took them across the Atlantic on a nine-week sea voyage; they then traveled 200 miles from Galveston to Panna Maria. This distance and lengthy crossing give the settlement story a concrete timeline and geography.

The story of White Deer’s Polish settlers also includes the first Catholic church, completed on May 13, 1913. The Jackson General Store was moved to what is now downtown White Deer in 1908; it housed J. C. Jackson’s general merchandise store. The oldest marked burial site in White Deer Cemetery is the 1915 grave of Howard Milhoan.

These places and dates shed light on different aspects of settlement history: immigration, religious community life, commerce, and remembrance of the dead. Comparing the dates makes the sequence clear without conflating the individual events.

Route 66 and Panhandle Places

A 7.2-mile stretch of Route 66 west of Conway passes a windmill, concrete agricultural buildings, and expansive open grazing land. The route description connects the road with visible features of the agricultural landscape. Panhandle became an important shipping hub after the railroad plans changed. These two stories show different connections to the development of places: changed railroad plans in one case, and a settlement founded as a railroad town in the other.

Landmark Buildings and Visitor Experience

The Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ is 19 stories tall. Visitors can walk around the cross at any time, day or night, following the Stations of the Cross. This visitor experience combines the widely visible landmark with a walk along its individual stations.

The Britten Leaning Tower was deliberately built in the early 1980s to lure motorists off the Interstate. Visitors can pull over on the side of the access road to photograph the tower, but they cannot get close to it. This restriction is worth keeping in mind when planning a visit: photos are intended to be taken from the road, not from close to the tower.

The themes range from the museum and architectural history to settlement and commerce, Route 66, and landmark buildings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Carson County, these different highlights can help you organize the themes of your trip.
