Rusk is an interesting place to stay if you want to focus on culture, railway history or a specific leisure activity. In the city center is the Heritage Center of Cherokee County Museum. Other points of interest in Rusk include the Cherokee Civic Theatre, the Texas State Railroad and the Birmingham Golf Club.

Local History at the Heritage Center and Footbridge

The Heritage Center of Cherokee County collects, preserves and presents artifacts of historical significance to Cherokee County. The museum also features an interpretive exhibit on the local timber industry, as well as an extensive collection of arrowheads and Caddo artifacts from the surrounding area. This brings together two specific interests: the history of a regional industry and artifacts discovered nearby. The center focuses on the history of Cherokee County.

The bridge in Footbridge Park reveals another side of the city’s history. It was built in 1889 so residents east of the valley could reach town when the water in One Eye Creek rose. The wooden trestle-style footbridge spans a low-lying, partly wooded valley. Its design, setting and specific historical purpose come together here.

The historic chapel also has a clearly dated local history: in 1980, it was moved to the Texas State Railroad grounds; before that, it stood on Main Street in downtown Rusk.

Texas State Railroad: Compare Starting Points and Destinations

Train rides vary by starting point, destination and duration. A four-hour Texas State Railroad trip runs from the historic Palestine Rail Depot in Palestine to the Rusk Rail Depot and back. The Rusk Turntable Excursion, by contrast, starts at the Rusk Rail Depot and travels to Maydelle to visit a locomotive and railroad-car turntable built in the 1890s; this trip also returns to its starting point. The starting location is a clear distinction when choosing: Palestine for the four-hour round trip, or Rusk for the trip to Maydelle. If a train ride will determine when you travel, check the schedule in advance.

Theater and Golf as Reasons to Visit

The Cherokee Civic Theatre hosts live concerts in Rusk and stages four productions during its season, which runs from September through April. There is also a youth program every summer. The dates indicate two distinct seasonal highlights: the four productions are part of the September-to-April season, while the youth program takes place in summer. If you want to plan your trip around a performance or concert, check the latest event dates in advance.

The Birmingham Golf Club operates a regular 9-hole golf course in Rusk. Alongside culture and railways, golf is another specific reason to visit.
