If you’re looking for a hotel in Cisco, you can get a sense of the town through several historical themes: First National Bank, the Mobley Hotel, and the Lela Latch Lloyd Museum. Each story has a different focus. The bank robbery centers on a clearly defined event in 1927; the museum spans a much longer period, while the Mobley Hotel is connected with the local history of hotels. This can help you decide before your trip which of these perspectives will be most interesting during your stay.

First National Bank and the 1927 robbery

First National Bank in Cisco is listed as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. On December 23, 1927, the robbery known as the “Santa Claus Bank Robbery” took place there. At the time, it led to the largest manhunt ever seen in Texas. The date, place, and name firmly anchor the story in Cisco. The focus here is a specific, dated event, distinct from the town museum’s longer history of collecting.

First National Bank is still standing, though in a new building. It features a painting of the Santa Claus Bank Robbery, along with a collection of related newspaper clippings and pictures of those involved. If you’d like to see this display in person, please check access arrangements before your visit.

The Mobley Hotel and the history of hotels

The Mobley Hotel offers a different historical perspective: it was built in 1916. In 1919, Conrad Hilton came to Cisco to buy a bank there. When the purchase fell through, he bought the Mobley Hotel instead. This sequence links a planned bank deal with the history of the building. It should be distinguished from the 1927 robbery known as the “Santa Claus Bank Robbery”: these are two separate bank stories with different historical contexts.

The town museum and an ongoing research project

Cisco’s City Hall, built in 1915, houses the Lela Latch Lloyd Museum. The collection includes artifacts dating from prehistoric times through the formative years of the town. Its time span therefore reaches beyond individual episodes of the 20th century, encompassing both early material evidence and the history of the town’s development. Exhibits include a 1,000-year-old Anasazi clay pot. The year the building was constructed and the time span covered by the collection are different reference points: City Hall was built in 1915, while the artifacts date back to prehistoric times.

At Cisco College, faculty and students are working to turn local artifacts into a professional, educational museum experience through historical research and creative curatorial work. The project is still in development. If you’d like to include it in your travel plans, ask in advance about opportunities to see a public presentation. While the Lela Latch Lloyd Museum displays artifacts from a broad span of history, the college project focuses on interpreting local artifacts through research and curatorial work.
