A trip to Fayette can focus on several different themes: historic architecture, cultural history, technical collections and nature. These themes appeal to different interests and can help you decide which places to include in your plans.

Historic Buildings and Visitor Information

The Fayette County Courthouse was completed in 1891 and is the oldest surviving J. Riely Gordon courthouse in Texas. It is a notable starting point if you are interested in historic architecture.

The Texas Heroes Museum is located in the former Fayette County Old Jail. The museum offers group tours on weekdays by prior request. If a tour is important to you, inquire in advance; this requirement applies to group tours.

Winedale is home to ten 19th-century wooden buildings. House tours are available by reservation only. Book in advance and confirm the arrangements before your visit, as tour arrangements may change. Visitors can find free parking on the grounds in front of the Visitors Center.

Museums with Different Themes

The Flatonia Rail Museum displays historic artifacts, model trains and photographs. The E. A. Arnim Archives & Museum, by contrast, documents the settlement, early history and ongoing development of the town of Flatonia and the surrounding rural area. Together, they offer distinct themes: a railroad-focused collection and a broader history of the town and region.

The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center includes an authentic Czech Village with historic buildings. It also offers insights into the lives, traditions and enduring legacy of Czech immigrants in Texas. The Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives is located on the second floor of the Fayette Public Library. The institutions differ both in their subject matter and in their format: on one side, a village with historic buildings and cultural interpretation; on the other, a museum and archive in a library.

The Factory Wing of the Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum explores the development and manufacture of model aircraft. This adds a distinct technical focus on model aviation to the railroad, town and cultural histories.

Parks, Trails and Fishing

The Fayette County parks system currently includes 11 parks and 7 trails. Fayette County Reservoir is primarily a lake for largemouth bass fishing. These offer two distinct nature-focused activities to plan around: several parks and trails on one hand, and a lake focused on largemouth bass fishing on the other.

Festivals and Culinary Highlights

The Fayette County Fair includes the German-Czech Mart, with about 18 stands offering a variety of foods; offerings may vary. La Grange’s annual Schmeckenfest is a Christmas celebration centered on Wassail, a warm cider-like drink. The culinary highlights differ: the Mart offers a variety of foods at its stands, while Wassail takes center stage at Schmeckenfest. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the dates and program in advance, as both may change.
