Discover Sherman: Culture, Jazz and Theater
Accommodation in Sherman
If you choose Sherman as your destination, cultural history, jazz and theater can shape your stay in different ways. A museum visit, jazz collections, theater and recurring events offer distinct experiences. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you want to visit a museum, plan your trip around a particular performance or take an annual event into account.
Cultural History in Sherman
In September 2018, Sherman was designated an official Texas Cultural District by the Texas Commission on the Arts. The Sherman Cultural District encourages visitors to explore museums and shops in historic Downtown Sherman. This highlights both individual cultural venues and shops as places to visit in the historic downtown area.
One specific historic site is the grounds of the Grayson County Courthouse in Sherman. At the intersection of Lamar and Travis, there is a 1999 historic marker about the Butterfield Overland Mail Route Through Grayson County. The marker focuses on a specific aspect of mail route history; by contrast, the Cultural District designation provides a broader framework for museums and shops in the historic downtown area. The two references therefore appeal to different interests: a single historic landmark or several cultural and shopping destinations.
Museums with Different Areas of Focus
The Sherman Museum is housed in a landmarked Carnegie library building dating from 1914. So a visit also includes the history of the building: it is a Carnegie library building from the early 20th century. The museum also offers activities for small groups, children and students of all ages, and is suitable for school trips. If children or students are part of your travel group, you can take these offerings into account when planning.
The Sherman Jazz Museum, by contrast, focuses on music history. It houses artifacts and collections from many famous jazz musicians of the past. The museum is generally open Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m.; it closes annually in January and August, and opening hours may change. Check the hours before your visit, especially if your plans depend on visiting the museum on a Thursday. This helps distinguish the Sherman Museum’s architectural history and activities from the jazz-focused collection at the Sherman Jazz Museum.
Theater and Annual Events
The Sherman Community Players are considered the third-oldest community theater in the state of Texas. They present eight productions per season. The season begins in September and ends in June with a large-scale musical. If you want to coordinate your trip with a particular performance, check its dates; the season dates alone do not tell you which evening the performance you want is scheduled.
The nonprofit organization Downtown Sherman NOW also hosts two annual events featuring food, Texas wines, live music and art. Exact dates and participating vendors may vary, so it is worth checking the event details before your trip. Unlike the theater season, these annual events bring together different cultural and culinary themes on individual dates. If you want to make a particular event the focus of your stay, plan around its date rather than relying solely on its recurring annual schedule.
A Venue with a Large Capacity
At Pecan Grove Park-West, the park has an amphitheater with lawn seating for up to 2,000 people. It hosts concerts, weddings and other community events. The capacity figure describes the venue, not the size of any single event. The amphitheater therefore offers a different point of reference from museum visits and theater performances: it is a venue used for various kinds of community events.
The Sherman Jazz Museum has regular opening hours and closes for two months each year; theater performances and events, in turn, each have their own dates. If you are planning your trip around a particular visit, check the relevant hours or event dates in advance.
