Grimes County: History, Water and Golf
Accommodation in Grimes County
Grimes County combines historic architecture and road history with a reservoir and golf in Navasota. This gives you a choice of different focuses for your stay: historic buildings and routes, a public tour, time by the water or golf. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these activities you want to shape your trip; then factor fixed visiting hours and access conditions into your daily plans.
Historic Architecture and Routes in Navasota
The Grimes County Courthouse was completed in 1894 and built in the Italianate style. Both brick and natural stone are part of the building. Its construction year, style and materials give the courthouse a distinct architectural focus and offer specific points of interest if you are interested in historic architecture.
Many early commercial buildings line Washington Avenue in Navasota. Historically, a major section of an early road ran through downtown, connecting Washington-on-the-Brazos and Goliad with Anderson, the county seat of Grimes County, and continuing on to Louisiana. The La Bahia Trail led northeast to Navasota and probably followed Cedar Creek through the town. Washington Avenue and the trail are therefore part of two different historical stories: an early road connection and a route that probably followed Cedar Creek.
Anderson: Fanthorp Inn and Public Tours
In Anderson, the Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site covers six acres; Anderson is the county seat. Historically, the inn was a well-known stopping point for travelers and the local community. It is open for public tours Friday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Plan your visit within this time window.
Reservoir and Golf
Gibbons Creek Reservoir is a 2,770-acre reservoir in Grimes County. A 2014 survey recorded a five-lane boat ramp and a 750-square-foot fishing pier there. The two facilities serve different purposes: the ramp for launching boats, the pier for fishing.
The public Pecan Lakes Golf Club, a golf course, is located in Navasota. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 7:00 a.m. until 30 minutes before dark. The closing time therefore depends on nightfall rather than a fixed time. There is a clear difference in visiting days: public tours at the Fanthorp Inn take place Friday through Sunday, while the golf club is also open Tuesday through Thursday.
Travel Planning
Navasota also has a municipal airport for small private planes and jets. If you plan to use it for your arrival, take airport operations into account. Check opening hours, access conditions and airport operations before your visit or trip.
