Schertz offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: trails through wooded areas, nature watching, and places where the city’s history comes to life. As you plan, consider which of these themes matter most to you. The options differ considerably: alongside longer trails, there are parks with old trees, fishing opportunities, and public places with historical or cultural significance.

Trails, Woods and Nature Watching

Crescent Bend Nature Park has miles of trails. Two bird blinds add to the nature experience; rare bird species have been spotted there. Fishing is also available along Cibolo Creek in the park. The same park brings together different interests: exercise, birdwatching, and fishing.

The Cibolo Creek Primitive Trails stretch for six miles. A trailhead in Cut-Off Park provides access to these trails. Motorized vehicles are not allowed on the trails. The distance and this rule are useful points of reference when deciding whether this option fits your day’s plans.

Those looking for a wooded trail will find one at Forest Ridge Park, running through a linear section of woodland used by walkers and runners. Heritage Oaks Park offers something different: it has hundreds of large oak and American hackberry trees, including old-growth trees. A walking path leads through the woods. While Crescent Bend Nature Park is especially associated with birdwatching and fishing, the old trees are the main attraction at Heritage Oaks Park.

Places and History in Schertz

The city’s history can also be explored through different points of reference. Schertz’s local heritage has roots in Alsace-Lorraine, France. The later settlement began with a land purchase: Sebastian and Johann Jean bought 600 acres of land in Guadalupe County for $600 on January 3, 1849. These details link the French origins of the local heritage to a specific date and a land purchase that was significant to the later settlement.

Saint Joseph's Chapel is located at 6400 FM 482 in Schertz. The Schertz Veterans Memorial Plaza honors men and women who serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces. The two places offer different ways to connect with the city’s history: a specific address is provided for the chapel, while the plaza is dedicated to remembering current and former members of the armed forces.

Schertz Hometown Harvest features freshly grown local produce, handmade goods, and food from local vendors. The goods and food available may vary by date. The Star-Spangled Spectacular is a Fourth of July fireworks event in Schertz. If you plan your trip around a market visit or this event, check the relevant dates and event details in advance.
