Hamilton County: Courthouse, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Hamilton County
The Hamilton County Courthouse brings together several stages in its history. Other highlights include the Hamilton County Historical Museum, historic sites in Hico, and a variety of outdoor activities and recreational opportunities. These themes can offer different focal points as you plan your trip: architecture and local history, museums, or outdoor activities.
Historic Buildings and Sites
The Hamilton County Historical Museum is housed in the former Hamilton County jail. It is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance.
The Hamilton County Courthouse was originally built in 1887 and remodeled in 1932 with modernization and expansion work. Inside are a two-story courtroom, curved oak-veneer wall paneling, schoolhouse pendant lights, and a shallow barrel-vaulted ceiling. The limestone walls are said to be made from locally quarried limestone. Above the four side entrances are cast-stone medallions featuring frontier figures, including a cowboy, a sheep, and a Shorthorn steer.
The Bulman Bridge has its own construction history: the King Bridge Company was commissioned to build it for Hamilton County in 1884. The bridge was later relocated to Pecan Creek Recreation Park and restored. The mural “Texas Rangers in Camp” was painted by Ward Lockwood in 1942.
In Hamilton, the Presbyterian Church was the first frame church to be built. It was moved intact from its original location at 119 South College Avenue and incorporated into the present building in 1947. The Gothic-style Saint Mary's Episcopal Church was consecrated in 1896. The two histories highlight different aspects: the relocation and incorporation of a church building in one case, and architecture and the year of consecration in the other.
History and Museums in Hico
Old Hico on Honey Creek marks the beginning of Hico's settlement in 1856. Stones from the ruins of the old mill were used to build a monument at Old Hico. Another local story concerns John R. Alford: the merchant became the first postmaster in 1860.
The Billy the Kid Museum in historic downtown Hico, Texas, displays artifacts and tells the story of Billy the Kid. The Hico Retrospective Museum is located upstairs at Blue Star Trading. It features historic photographs and artifacts and also serves as an event venue. For those interested in local history, these offer two distinct perspectives: the story of a famous person and historic images and objects from Hico.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
The tree-lined trail along the Bosque River in Hico follows the river. Covered picnic tables along the trail offer views of the water. Hico also has an 18-hole disc golf course surrounded by large pecan trees, overlooking the Bosque River, and measuring more than 6,000 feet in length. A riverside trail and a disc golf course offer two distinctly different recreational options.
A climbing gym in Hico is housed in a converted grain silo. Activities include indoor and outdoor climbing, an obstacle course, a low ropes course, and a zip line. Pecan Creek also shapes the landscape with a greenbelt of open and wooded areas. Numerous bridges cross the creek and its tributaries; the area provides habitats for birds and dragonflies.
City Lake in Hamilton County is considered a good place to watch waterfowl and wading birds. As park conditions can change, check local conditions before your visit. On many weekends throughout the year, gliders can be seen taking off from Hamilton Municipal Airport and then silently soaring over the Hill Country. Glider activity is weather-dependent.
Along Hamilton County's back roads, you can stop to take photos and discover small-town cafés, historic sites, and scenic overlooks. If you are traveling to hunt, check the applicable licensing and season requirements in advance. The wildlife species mentioned include white-tailed deer, turkeys, doves, quail, and wild hogs.
Festivals and Local Products
Dove Fest is considered a Hamilton tradition that has been held for more than 50 years over Labor Day weekend. The festival includes a parade, a beauty pageant, a 5K run, a rodeo, live entertainment, shopping, food, and family-friendly activities. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates.
Wiseman House Chocolates makes handcrafted Texas chocolate products. These include truffles, toffee, ganache, chocolate clusters, and drinking chocolate. The selection ranges from individual sweets to a chocolate beverage.
