Hebbronville’s Architectural and Commercial History

The Hotel Viggo is a Mission Revival-style building and a historic landmark on the Jim Hogg County Courthouse square in Hebbronville. It was built in 1915 to accommodate businesspeople and travelers from the surrounding area. Shortly after it opened, the building served as a fortress because local ranchers feared an attack by Pancho Villa’s men. Its architecture, original purpose, and this episode belong to different chapters of its history.

The Old Garza Home was built in 1893 and served as Hebbronville’s post office for a few years. Its steeply pitched roof also earned it the name Casa de Quatro Aguas, or “House of Four Waterfalls” in English. The house is considered the oldest in Hebbronville and is connected to Tejano history and Texas’s western past. The name draws attention to the roof’s shape, while its former use as a post office conveys another aspect of the building.

The New York Store opened in 1909 and was moved to its present location in 1924. In addition to general merchandise, the store later offered tailoring and a dry-cleaning department. It remained in the same family’s ownership for more than a century. Its changing uses add an example of the town’s commercial history to its architectural story.

Ranching Traditions in Randado

Randado was first settled by Hipolito Garcia in 1830 and is considered one of the oldest continuously operating ranches in the United States. Rancho Randado is home to the ruins of an old horse ranch where Spanish horses were once bred. The equipment made there is also part of its legacy: Randado was known for fine leather and horsehair pieces crafted by its vaqueros. The story encompasses ranching, horse breeding, and craftsmanship.
