Discover Giddings: Culture and History
Accommodation in Giddings
Giddings can be explored through several distinct themes. Transportation history, historical collections, and art sit alongside an annual book festival and opportunities for basketball and golf.
Transportation History and Historic Places
Giddings’ Freight and Passenger Depot serves as a transportation museum and visitor center. This brings transportation history and visitor information together in one building. There is also a historic walking tour in Giddings’ historic district. It has a different focus from the depot: here, the historic district itself takes center stage.
The historic Schubert-Fletcher Home houses the Lee County Museum. Historical photographs and memorabilia about the history of Lee County are displayed there. The Giddings Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center is also located in the same historic home. The museum and visitor center are therefore two distinct places to visit in the Schubert-Fletcher Home. The historic walking tour focuses on Giddings’ historic district, while the photographs and memorabilia at the Lee County Museum tell the story of the county. The attractions thus differ in their geographic focus, from Giddings to Lee County.
Murals and Collections
Giddings has nine murals. Most were painted by a local artist, while some are historic additions. The works therefore differ both in how they were created and in their historical connections.
One well-known work at the Giddings Post Office is titled Cowboys Receiving the Mail. Otis Dozier painted the mural in 1939. Its title, artist, and year give this work a specific historical connection to public art in Giddings.
The Giddings Public Library and Cultural Center houses the Arnold Smith Native American Artifact Collection. The Giddings Library & Cultural Center also has the Hilton Lee Smith Baseball Memorabilia Collection. Hilton Lee Smith was born in Giddings, played for the Kansas City Monarchs, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. Giddings offers a variety of collections, from Native American artifacts to baseball memorabilia.
Festival and Recreation
The Texas Word Wrangler Book Festival takes place annually at the Giddings Public Library and Cultural Center. The festival features Texas authors and their books. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.
There are also specific options for sports enthusiasts: Simmang Park has a covered basketball court, and the Giddings Golf Course has nine holes. These activities complement the historical and cultural attractions. You can decide which ones matter most based on your own travel interests.
