Bay City offers a range of options for different kinds of stays: nature by the water, history, a recurring market day or golf. The options also vary in activity, route length and scheduling requirements.

Water and nature at Riverside Park

Riverside Park includes 100 acres of riverfront and woodland. A wildlife observation trail extends for 1 mile. Fishing for redfish, largemouth bass and catfish is available on the Colorado River at Riverside Park. This offers a choice of different outdoor activities: wildlife watching and fishing; the riverfront and woodland define the park landscape. The 100 acres are equivalent to around 40 hectares.

Another water activity is the Riverside Rally Loop Paddling Trail. The approximately 7-mile round trip runs from the park to Bay City Dam and back. It passes red bluffs, sandy shores and live oaks. To use the paddling trail, you need a day-use permit and must check in at the ranger station. Plan for both of these requirements before your paddling trip.

When comparing it with the wildlife trail, note that the paddling trail’s approximately 7 miles include the round trip; the wildlife observation trail is 1 mile long. The activities also differ: paddling a loop or observing wildlife. You can tailor your nature plans to the route and activity you prefer.

History and market days

Downtown Bay City includes two historic districts: the Downtown Historic District and the South Side Historic District. The Matagorda County Children's Museum is a historic interactive town. These offer different cultural points of interest: the districts represent historic urban areas, while the museum is an interactive historic town. If history is a focus of your trip, you can take these different themes into account when planning.

Bay City Market Day takes place around the Downtown Courthouse Square on the fourth Saturday of each month from March through December. The market day is therefore tied to a particular day of the week and a set period of the year. If you want to plan your trip around the market, check the specific date in advance.

Golf with two different ways to play

Rio Colorado Golf Course is a public 18-hole golf course on the Colorado River. Le Tulle Park is home to Big Oak, a 24-hole disc golf course. The key factor in choosing between them is the type of game: golf on a public course or disc golf. The hole counts refer to different sports and are therefore not a direct measure of identical offerings. If golf is one of your travel interests, you can compare the two options by type of game and number of holes.
