Maverick County: History, Culture and Recreation
Accommodation in Maverick County
When planning a trip to Maverick County, you may have different priorities: architecture, military history, walks, golf and events. In Eagle Pass, you’ll find several specific points of interest, including the Maverick County Courthouse, the Fort Duncan Museum and Maverick County Lake. When searching for a hotel, consider whether your stay will be shaped primarily by historical interests, outdoor recreation or a particular event date.
The Courthouse and Historic River Crossings
The Maverick County Courthouse in Eagle Pass was built in 1884–1885. It is considered an outstanding example of Victorian design and also features a Romanesque Revival style with Second Empire details. The clock tower still houses the original works and bell by E. Howard. Its construction period, architectural design and preserved clock mechanism represent different aspects of the same building.
The history of routes and river crossings is also part of the region’s story. The historic El Camino Real crossed the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, the county seat. Paso de Francia was a ford across the Rio Grande in Maverick County and is associated with Alonso De León’s 1689 expedition. The site is privately owned.
Military History in Eagle Pass
Fort Duncan was established in Eagle Pass on March 27, 1849, by Captain Sidney Burbank with Companies A, B and F of the 1st U.S. Infantry Regiment. The fort served as a border post near the route taken by California-bound emigrants. In 1938, the City of Eagle Pass purchased the site for use as a park and recreation area. The Fort Duncan Museum in Eagle Pass displays Indigenous artifacts, military exhibits and local artifacts.
Another timeline concerns Eagle Pass Army Air Field: it was activated in 1942 and converted into a basic pilot training school in November 1944. Flight training there ended in April 1945. Its development can therefore be understood through three clear stages: activation, conversion and the end of flight training.
Walks, Riverfront and Golf
Shelby Park covers 47.4 acres of parkland along the Rio Grande. Maverick County Lake in Eagle Pass is used for morning walks. The Eagle Pass Golf Course offers a different kind of recreation: the public course has nine holes, and two sets of tees allow for an 18-hole experience. This gives you a choice between a morning walk and a round of golf as clearly distinct activities.
Planning for Culture and Events
Eagle Pass’ 300 Block Art and Entertainment District brings together art, venues, restaurants and shops. The International Friendship Festival takes place every March and includes parades, food and miniature golf tournaments. The Dog Days of Summer Festival takes place in August in the 300 Block Art and Entertainment District. Check current event dates if you’d like to plan your stay around one of these festivals.
For live music and other entertainment, the Qué Pasa Lounge at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel offers live music, DJs, concerts and karaoke nights. Since the event schedule may change, it’s a good idea to check current events and opening hours before your trip.
Find a Hotel That Suits Your Trip
