Mcgregor offers several different ways to plan a stay: five public parks with trails and sports facilities, a museum downtown, and history connected to the railroad and the town’s early founding. Seasonal recreational activities and recurring events also have specific dates. When deciding when to travel, it’s worth distinguishing between park activities, cultural sites and event dates.

Parks and Summer Activities

The five public parks offer walking trails, sports facilities, playgrounds, disc golf, fishing opportunities, a splash pad and a swimming pool. This means there’s something for everyone, from walking and sports to play and time by the water. Amsler Park has a 9-hole disc golf course with nine baskets and two tee pads per basket. Bewley Park has two tennis courts and six pickleball courts. The Amsler Park Aquatic Center offers swimming, splashing and diving in the summer.

The Amsler Park Aquatic Center season has set dates: it opens every year on the Friday after Memorial Day and closes on the second Saturday in August. Check the dates for the year of your visit before traveling. The Cardboard Boat Regatta is held there every year on the second Saturday in June. For planning purposes, this is a specific June date within the broader swimming season: if you’re traveling for the regatta, you can distinguish its date from the season, which runs into August.

Museums, Buildings and Local History

The Texas Museum of Theatre and Broadcast is located downtown, at the corner of South Main Street and 3rd Street. It is housed in the historic building that formerly accommodated Lee Hardware and later Keith’s Ace Hardware. Its collection includes movie theater equipment, antique musical instruments and two Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organs. These collections make both theater equipment and historic musical instruments a specific focus.

The L-shaped railroad depot provides an architectural contrast: it dates from around 1904 and retains its original appearance. The Spradley Telephone Museum is also one of Mcgregor’s attractions.

The town’s historical marker is located at 409 W. 4th Street, at the corner of 4th Street and Madison Street. It recalls the original townsite lots of McGregor Springs, which were sold at public auction on September 7, 1882. It also explains the town’s name: it was named after Dr. Gregor Carmichael McGregor (1824–1902), a Texas pioneer physician and later a respected businessman from Waco.

Events and Seasonal Planning

McGregor Founder’s Day takes place every year on the third weekend in September. During the event, local artisans and food vendors line the streets; Saturday morning’s program includes a 5K run and a parade. If this weekend determines your travel dates, check the dates for the year of your visit before traveling.

The Christmas Parade features an illuminated parade followed by a meet-and-greet with Santa Claus and cookies at Legacy Park. The McGinley Memorial Public Library’s seasonal StoryWalk offers a different way to experience downtown: it takes children and adults along Main Street and through participating downtown businesses.
