Pecos County in Texas is a large county. Many hotel decisions involve Fort Stockton, where several museums and historic sites are located. However, a hotel somewhere in the county is not automatically close to these destinations; check the town and address before booking.
Fort Stockton and Comanche Springs
Historic Fort Stockton was in operation from 1867 to 1886. It was established at the important Comanche Springs to protect the mail route from San Antonio to El Paso, and was staffed by soldiers of the 9th Cavalry, the “Buffalo Soldiers.” Today, reconstructed barracks and kitchens, as well as a fort museum and visitor center, are open to visitors. The springs themselves stopped flowing in the early 1960s after heavy groundwater extraction. Rooney Park is located on their historic site and offers year-round birdwatching opportunities, including for roadrunners. A historic spring site is not the same as a spring that flows today.
More museums and sites
The Annie Riggs Memorial Museum is housed in an adobe building constructed in 1899 as the Koehler Hotel. Thirteen rooms and a courtyard tell the story of archaeology, geology, ranching, Hispanic heritage, and the development of the area. Hovey School was established in 1916 as a one-room school and became a community center after it closed in 1938. Horsehead Crossing was a landmark on several historic routes; Goodnight and Loving reached it in 1866 with a large herd of cattle after a long, waterless stretch.
