Portland lies on Corpus Christi Bay and Nueces Bay. Parks, wetlands and a range of water activities give the area several clearly distinct highlights. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between experiencing nature, swimming and kiteboarding: the best places for each are not the same, and each offers a different perspective on the destination. Portland is accessible via US Highway 181 and State Highway 35.

Shoreline and Trails

Sunset Lake Park is a protected public park between Portland and Corpus Christi. It lies on the shores of Nueces Bay and Corpus Christi Bay and includes an ecologically rich wetland and a saltwater lake. The wetland and lake give a visit a nature-focused feel that is distinct from a swimming pool or a water sports offering.

A two-mile hiking and biking trail runs through the park, passing through coastal marshes and wetlands. This makes it easy to think of the park as a place for exercise and enjoying the landscape: the trail is designed for hiking and biking, and the coastal scenery is part of the route. Its length and the two ways to use it are practical considerations if you prefer to explore on foot or by bike. The park combines a natural area with a route where you can focus on the surrounding marsh and wetland landscape.

Swimming and Water Sports

The Portland Aquatic Center is a year-round outdoor facility with two swimming pools. The leisure pool features a boat slide, a double slide, water bubblers, palm-shaped shade structures and a zero-depth entry. This provides a dedicated swimming option alongside the natural and trail-focused highlights of Sunset Lake Park: the center is defined by its pools and their amenities, while the park is characterized by its wetland, saltwater lake, and hiking and biking trail.

Violet Andrews Park focuses on kiteboarding: favorable waves and shallow water make it well suited to the sport. This distinguishes it both from the Aquatic Center’s pools and from the trail through the coastal marshes. If you want to plan your trip around a particular water activity, you can choose among different interests: swimming, kiteboarding, or getting active along a wetland landscape.

Portland’s History

John G. Willacy laid out Portland in 1890. In its early years, the town developed into a center for commercial vegetable farming. This history adds another perspective on Portland alongside its natural and water-based attractions: you can get to know the city through both its coastal scenery and recreation spots, and its founding and early economic role.
