Wilson County lies in the upper coastal plain of South Texas. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay here, you can plan your trip around different interests: local history, historic routes, museums, events, or time outdoors. The places and topics below provide specific starting points for tailoring your plans to what interests you most.

Local History and Historic Routes

In Floresville, the Wilson County Courthouse was built in the Italianate style in 1884. It is designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Also in Floresville, the Wilson County Jailhouse Museum is housed in a jail built in 1887. Its original floor plan and jail cells have been preserved.

The history of Rancho de las Cabras is connected to Mission San Francisco Mission Espada: the rancho served as an outpost of the mission. Archaeological excavations uncovered a large stone wall and defensive towers built to protect its residents. The site therefore highlights both the outpost’s former function and its physical remains.

The Floresville El Camino Trail is 2.5 miles long and runs from Hospital Boulevard at U.S. Highway 97 to Riverbend Golf Course. It is the longest walkable section of El Camino Real de Los Tejas and was built along the corridor of an abandoned railroad line. The trail offers insights into 18th-century Spanish settlement and 19th-century railroad expansion. History and route are closely connected here, without limiting the trail to a single era.

Historic routes also shape local history. La Bahía Road ran northwest to southeast through Wilson County and was a historic route between the Alamo and Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga near Goliad. Sutherland Springs was a stagecoach stop on the Old San Antonio Road. Floresville is also on the Texas Independence Trail.

Parks and Outdoor Activities

Jackson Nature Park covers 50 acres, is owned by Wilson County, and is managed by the San Antonio River Authority. Visitors can hike, enjoy nature and birdwatching, and picnic there. The park offers several different activities in one place, while the Floresville El Camino Trail focuses more on its route and historical insights.

Floresville River Park covers 33 acres along the San Antonio River. Floresville City Pool has a junior Olympic-size swimming pool, a one-meter diving board, and a children’s slide. Pecan Park has a 0.5-mile route for walking, running, and jogging. At La Vernia City Park, you’ll find a walking or hiking trail, a disc golf course, and a butterfly garden. For your trip, you can choose between a dedicated route, a park with several activities, and other recreational options.

The landscape also varies by region: the western part of Wilson County is drained by the San Antonio River, while the eastern part is drained by Cibolo and Ecleto creeks. This geographic overview complements the selection of trails and parks with a look at the county’s waterways.

Museums, Music, and Local Events

La Vernia Heritage Museum features permanent and special exhibits on the history of La Vernia and Wilson County. The Floresville Opry, which began in 2011 as a community-focused event, features well-known and local talent. The Opry offers live music and dancing on the first Thursday of every month at the Wilson County Expo & Community Center. If you’d like to plan your trip around this event, check the current event date when making your plans.

The Floresville Peanut Festival takes place every year on the second full weekend in October at Courthouse Square in historic downtown Floresville. In Stockdale, the Watermelon Jubilee is part of a different local event tradition: Queen Melone takes a more formal approach, while the Rodeo Queen has a Western theme. The two crowning traditions date back to 1937 and 1962, respectively.

In Poth, the depot has been restored and is part of the town’s local museum. The Dewees-Remschel House serves as a museum, displaying historic furniture and household items. It can also be used for weddings, receptions, and other events. These places offer different perspectives on local history and community life, from a restored depot to a house museum that also hosts events.

If the Floresville Peanut Festival or an Opry date is important to your trip, include the relevant date in your plans.
