Beaver County: Mountain Lakes, Routes, and History
Accommodation in Beaver County
At 12,174 feet, Delano Peak is the highest mountain in the Tushar Range. Beaver County offers travelers mountain scenery, lakes, routes, and historic sites. When planning, it helps to note the specific differences: some activities are seasonal, while trail length, elevation gain, or the type of experience can help you choose others.
Mountains, Lakes, and Hikes
Blue Lake is a six-acre, deep-blue lake below Mounts Baldy and Belknap. A moderate hike leads to the lake. For comparing different routes, there are several details to consider: the Skyline National Recreation Trail is 23 miles long and suitable for day hikes and backpacking trips. The Pocket Trail is a six-mile loop hike with 1,500 feet of elevation gain. A short hike leads to Granite Peak Reservoir, and the round trip takes approximately 40 minutes. Distance, elevation gain, and approximate duration each describe different aspects of these routes.
The Milford Domes in the Mineral Mountains have bolted sport climbing routes. Check route conditions locally before climbing there. Mags Brothel is another natural feature: its characteristics include bubbling pools, boiling mud puddles, and hissing steam vents. Visitor conditions may vary.
Lakes and Outdoor Activities
Activities at Tushar Lake may include fishing, hiking, canoeing, sand volleyball, and wildlife watching. The area also includes a small adjoining meadow and the lake. Tushar Lakeside Campground offers opportunities for canoeing and has three large group sites, as well as several individual sites with tables and fire rings.
The bodies of water offer different opportunities: stand-up paddleboarding is possible at Puffer Lake during the summer months. Anderson Meadow Reservoir offers calm water for stand-up paddleboarding; a Forest Service campground with ten sites is nearby. At LeBaron Reservoir, you can paddle a kayak or paddleboard; motorized boats are not allowed.
Other campgrounds offer practical amenities. Manderfield Reservoir has shoreline camping sites and a vault toilet. At Minersville Lake, also known as Minersville Reservoir, there is a county-operated campground and a paved boat ramp. If you plan to use these facilities, check their status again before your trip.
Scenic Drives and Seasonal Activities
The Beaver Canyon Scenic Byway follows Utah Highway 153 east through Beaver County to the end of the paved road near Puffer Lake. For a different perspective on the landscape, try the Kimberly/Big John Backway: this state-designated gravel route is 62 miles long and offers views of Beaver County’s highest peaks. Road conditions may vary seasonally; check local conditions before setting out. The Kent’s Lakes Loop Drive, also known as FS Route 137, is a well-traveled, well-maintained dirt and gravel road.
The season can also help you choose activities. In summer, mountain biking is possible at Eagle Point Resort, and you can try stand-up paddleboarding at Puffer Lake. In winter, Kent’s Lake Trail is suitable for snowmobiling. If you’re interested in the Paiute Trail, Section 05 begins at the northeastern edge of Beaver and generally follows the lower section of North Creek. Check trail conditions and applicable regulations in advance. Merchant Valley offers opportunities for fly fishing, including along its streams and at Merchant Valley Dam.
History and Special Places
Several places in Beaver tell very different stories. Frisco Ghost Town preserves the remains of a former mining town that came into being after silver was discovered in 1875. Beaver Opera House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Rock Cabin has an unusual architectural feature: the building was constructed in a hollowed-out area of a large boulder.
A flag from the USS Utah is on display in the second-floor courtroom of the Beaver Courthouse Museum. The ship sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor. At Cove Fort, missionaries offer free tours of the fort and surrounding buildings. For a different kind of experience, visitors can milk Lily, the cow featured in The Creamery’s farm-to-table room.
Whether you want to focus on hiking trails, seasonal outdoor activities, or historic sites, Beaver County offers a range of specific options. A visit to Cove Fort, a route described by distance or elevation gain, and a seasonal activity each call for different planning.
