In Iron County, the western loops of the Color Country OHV Trail System pass through high desert landscapes; the eastern sections run through forested terrain. The journey through Iron also reveals striking traces of history. Cedar Breaks National Monument lies on the western edge of the Markagunt Plateau. Geology, cultural sites and outdoor activities also offer different ways to shape a trip through Iron.

Landscapes and Getting Around

The Color Country OHV Trail System connects scenic areas of Iron County with trail systems in neighboring counties. Its western loops pass through high desert landscapes, while the eastern sections run through forested terrain. This is a practical distinction for planning a trip: you can choose the route sections according to their different landscapes. Iron County also has bike trails for all ability levels.

Parowan Gap is a three-mile-long pass through the Red Hills between Parowan Valley and northern Cedar Valley. For a scenic loop drive, consider a route through Cedar City, Cedar Breaks, Brian Head and Parowan. Highway 148 through Cedar Breaks National Monument connects National Scenic Byway 143 with Highway 14, making this loop possible. Roads may be closed to cars in winter.

Cultural History and Distinctive Places

Frontier Homestead State Park Museum explores the pioneer and early industrial history of Cedar City, Iron County and southwestern Utah. Its exhibits include an extensive collection of horse-drawn wagons, historic buildings, an exhibit on Indigenous heritage, a sawmill and a reconstructed charcoal blast furnace. The museum brings together different aspects of the region’s history, from transportation and daily life to early industry.

The Parowan Gap Petroglyphs are listed on the National Register of Historic Places for their significance as a cultural treasure. At the Parowan Gap Dinosaur Track Site, a trail passes dinosaur tracks exposed as natural casts on fallen sandstone blocks of the Iron Springs Formation. Old Iron Town preserves the ruins of an ironworks, a surviving beehive-shaped charcoal kiln and a nature trail.

Activities and Seasonal Differences

Brian Head Resort covers more than 650 acres across the connected Giant Steps and Navajo mountains. It has 71 runs and eight chairlifts. In summer, activities include mountain biking, a mini zipline, chairlift rides, disc golf, a batting cage, a bungee trampoline, a climbing wall and Avalanche Tubing. Activities and operating schedules may change; check current seasonal information if a particular activity is important to your trip.

Stargazing is possible year-round at Cedar Breaks National Monument. This means that a year-round activity and the offerings specifically described for summer at Brian Head Resort are available at different times. Ironside Disc Golf Course has two baskets at each hole, making it two courses in one.

Mountain biking and hiking trails are accessible from Rocky Peak Campground; conditions at the site may vary. Three Peaks Campground covers 155 acres within the 6,000-acre Three Peaks Recreation Area. Its 17 sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Other facilities include a day-use group pavilion called Bulloch Pavilion and a group campsite with its own pavilion. Availability may change, so check before your visit.

Culture and Everyday Life in Cedar City

The Utah Shakespeare Festival was founded in 1961 and welcomes more than 100,000 visitors each year from across the country and around the world. The program changes each season; check the dates if a performance is important to your trip planning. The Festival City Farmers Market takes place year-round every Saturday at 100 West Center Street in Cedar City. Here, too, it is a good idea to check seasonal details before you arrive.
