Local History and Museum
Bicknell was originally called Thurber, after A.K. Thurber, who built the first house in the area in 1875. Thomas Bicknell, a prominent educator and historian from Providence, Rhode Island, offered a library of 1,000 books to any town that would take his name. These two stories give the town’s name a concrete historical background.
The Thurber Ward Relief Society Hall also tells the story of the local past: it served as a school, a place for church meetings, and a venue for social events. It was acquired and restored by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers in 1971. The Bicknell DUP Thurber Relief Society Hall Museum is listed as a history museum. Check current information before visiting.
Nature Nearby
Near Bicknell is Bicknell Bottoms, a wet, marshy area and an excellent habitat for wildlife. It is also home to the state’s largest fish hatchery. Bicknell Bottoms is designated as a Waterfowl Management Area and is managed to protect and increase waterfowl populations or to allow regulated recreational hunting. Management conditions may change.
The Fremont River flows down from the plateau toward Bicknell. Spring water cools the river and increases its depth. Sunglow Canyon lies east of Bicknell, with a campground, pit toilets, campsites, and a short hiking trail. The wetland, river, and canyon offer distinct options for nature enthusiasts; the canyon listing also connects camping information with a short trail.
