Lyndon combines riverside scenery, outdoor activities, and history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Lyndon, you can weigh the destination’s options according to your interests: paddling on the Passumpsic River, mountain biking trails, downhill skiing, or historic covered bridges. There’s also a mown riverside trail, disc golf, and events held on a regular weekly or annual schedule. The differences between these offerings can help you decide what to focus on during your trip, rather than treating every option as part of a single program.

River and Trails

Lyndon lies where several streams and smaller waterways join to form the Passumpsic River. Paddling routes are available on the Passumpsic River in Lyndon. Distinct from these is the Passumpsic River Paddlers' Trail, a community initiative to expand water-based recreation opportunities on the river. For a land-based route, there’s the Paths Around Lyndon (PAL) River Trail: an easy-to-walk, mown trail along the Passumpsic River, with access from downtown and Lyndon Institute. The paddling routes and PAL therefore differ in how they let you experience the river.

Land-Based Activities

Kingdom Trails Network mountain biking trails run through Lyndon. Downhill skiing is available at Lyndon Outing Club. These two offerings are easy to distinguish by activity: one centers on mountain biking on trails, the other on downhill skiing. The VTSU-Lyndon Frisbee Disc Golf Course adds disc golf to the mix; the course has 18 baskets and is located on the 175-acre campus of Vermont State University-Lyndon.

The Lyndon State Forest is associated with a range of scattered recreational activities, including birdwatching, hunting, snowshoeing, berry picking, and cross-country skiing. The range spans everything from observing nature and gathering berries to more physically active pursuits.

Bridges and Local History

Lyndon has five historic covered bridges. The Centre Covered Bridge spans the Passumpsic River in the Town of Lyndon and is an outstanding surviving example of a 19th-century covered bridge with a Paddleford truss system. A truss system describes a bridge’s structural framework; Paddleford refers to the specific type of truss used in the Centre Covered Bridge. This allows the structure to be understood both through its historic form of construction and through its named technical system.

A fountain stands in Bandstand Park, formerly called Lyndonville Park. It was purchased in New York in 1885. The park’s former name and the fountain’s purchase mark two distinct aspects of local history.

Markets and Events

A farmers’ market is held in Bandstand Park on Fridays; seasonal details may change. If you’re planning to visit the market, check the latest dates in advance. The Stars and Stripes Festival & Parade is celebrated in Lyndon every July. If you’re planning your visit around the festival, coordinate it with the event’s specific date.
