Onley: Railways and Trade
Onley emerged along the railway in the mid-1880s; the village was originally known as Crossroads. With the arrival of the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad, a ticket office and a freight depot opened in Onley. Both passenger transport and freight handling are therefore part of the town’s early history: the ticket office served travelers, while the depot was for transporting goods. The railway consequently shaped the town in two ways—as a connection for travelers and as part of the movement of goods.
The Society for Preservation of Onley’s Train Station has preserved the old Onley Railroad Station. The preserved station building makes the railway’s history tangible in a specific structure. Another example of a change in function is the Produce Exchange building, which now serves as a church. The station thus represents the preservation of a historic place; the Produce Exchange’s present-day use as a church shows a different kind of change.
Trade History and Community
Trade is also part of Onley’s past. Fruit and vegetable farmers came to Onley to sell their produce to merchants. Local watermen brought products from the surrounding waters to Onley to sell them there. The comparison shows two distinct sources: agricultural produce and products from the surrounding waters. In both cases, Onley was the place of sale. The town’s historic role in trade can therefore be understood through both railway transport and the sale of various products.
Onley United Methodist Church has been a fixture of the Eastern Shore community for more than 100 years. This broadens the picture beyond transport and goods: here, the focus is on a longstanding role in the community. The town’s history thus encompasses both economic changes and a lasting social presence.
