Warm Springs – Hot Springs, History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Warm Springs
Hot Springs and Bathhouses
The Warm Springs Pools are historic bathhouses with mineral-rich water that naturally warms to 98°F. Reservations are required for the Warm Springs Pools. The historic Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ Bathhouses welcome guests daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check the reservation requirements and opening hours before your visit.
The Gentlemen’s Bathhouse was built in 1761 and is described as the first spa facility in America.
Historic Architecture and Public Views
The Warm Springs and West Warm Springs Historic District includes 223 significant historic resources and covers about 720 acres. It developed around natural hot springs that attracted visitors for recreational, medical, and social reasons.
Many properties in the District are private residences and are not open to the public; however, many are visible from public roads. A house being visible does not automatically mean it is accessible. When viewing the District, respect private property and stay on public roads.
Trails and Natural History
In the Warm Springs Mountain Preserve, the Dan Ingalls Overlook on State Route 39 east of the village of Warm Springs is one of the best access points to the public trails. Check current access information before setting out.
The Ingalls Overlook Trail is near Warm Springs. The round-trip route is 2.4 miles long; signs along the first mile provide information about Warm Springs Mountain and the region’s natural history.
The Flag Rock Loop hike begins just behind the Milk House Market in Warm Springs and climbs through the forest to Flag Rock.
When choosing a trail, note the difference: the Ingalls Overlook Trail combines a round-trip route with natural history, while the Flag Rock Loop pairs a forest climb with Flag Rock as its destination.
Art and Route 39
Warm Springs Gallery was founded in 1994. It promotes national and international artists and offers original works of art to collectors and art lovers.
Route 39 is a scenic drive through the Allegheny Mountains and George Washington National Forest to Warm Springs. If you are planning a trip along this road, you can also consider the scenery along the route as part of your plans.
