Chesterfield County’s public recreation offerings include parks, historic sites, an extensive trail network, and nature preserves. Chesterfield has 41 miles of trails. You can shape your stay around historic places, explore the landscape, or combine both interests. The attractions offer a range of highlights, from mining history and early settlements to river landscapes and trails through wetlands.

Historic places and their stories

At Howlett Line Park, a short unpaved trail passes interpretive signs. The park preserves an artillery position on the Confederate earthworks line that once ran between the James River and the Appomattox River. Mid-Lothian Mines Park focuses on the history of early coal mining, from the discovery of coal in 1701 to the start of commercial mining in the mid-1730s. The 44-acre preserve includes the cut-stone ruins of the mines in a wooded setting.

The Chesterfield County Museum is a replica of the 1750 courthouse. Temporary exhibits also explore aspects of Chesterfield County history, and their subjects may change. The exhibits also include a recreation of a typical Chesterfield country store from around the turn of the 20th century. The historic 1892 Jail retains its original cells with iron bars. Also known as the “Old Jail,” the building served as Chesterfield County’s jail until 1962. Tours of the Jail begin at the museum. Check the County’s current visitor information before your visit.

The Magnolia Grange House Museum offers another glimpse into life in the past: built in 1822, the house dates to the Federal period and conveys what life was like on a rural Virginia plantation in the 19th century. Tours are led by trained docents. The Pleasant View School presents another historical perspective, depicting African American education in the early 20th century, when public schools were segregated. The Citie of Henricus was founded in 1611 and was the second successful English settlement in the New World. Living history, reenactments, and educational programs are part of the offerings at Henricus Historical Park. Advance reservations are required for tours of Falling Creek Ironworks; check the reservation arrangements ahead of time.

Trails, rivers, and natural areas

The trails offer various ways to experience Chesterfield’s landscape. The Appomattox River Trail offers hiking trails in South Chesterfield. The Dutch Gap Conservation Area encompasses more than 800 acres of forests, wildlife, and waterways along the James River. The Dutch Gap Trail is a 4.5-mile loop through tidal wetlands, meadows, and forests. Its stated length and scenery make it a specific option for those looking for a loop rather than an unspecified trail distance.

At Pocahontas State Park, trails are designated by use: there are 6.6 miles of hiking trails, 33.1 miles of designated bike trails, and 46.5 miles of designated multi-use trails. The scenery along the trails includes forests, wetlands, ponds, lakes, and grassy open spaces. Year-round camping is available there; availability and reservation rules may change, so it’s a good idea to check current information before planning. Rockwood Nature Center features native reptiles and amphibians, with more than five miles of paved and unpaved trails outside.

The James River also shapes the recreation offerings: Robious Landing Park provides river access for kayaking, canoeing, rowing, and fishing. Trails and waterways thus offer distinct experiences. Those interested in the development of the trail network can also learn about the planned Fall Line, which is intended to connect the Virginia Capital Trail in Richmond with the Appomattox River Trail in Petersburg.
