When looking for hotels in South Boston, your travel interests may be the deciding factor: Are performing arts and regional history your priorities, or would you rather plan around trails and time outdoors? The Prizery, the South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History, the South Boston Historic District, and Edmunds Park offer different ways to experience the city. The Fire Hydrant Walking Tour and the Tobacco Heritage Trail are distinguished primarily by their route features and how they can be used.

Culture and History

At the Chastain Theatre, The Prizery welcomes artists and ensembles from around the world. The complex includes a performing arts theater, an art gallery, classrooms, and a large space for community events. The Prizery is housed in a 38,000-square-foot building listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the South Boston Historic Tobacco Warehouse District. Programming is subject to change.

The South Boston-Halifax County Museum of Fine Arts and History displays artworks and historical artifacts connected to South Boston, Halifax County, and Southside Virginia. Its most significant exhibit focuses on The Crossing of the Dan. This gives the museum a scope that ranges from local to regional, while this exhibit provides a particular focus.

The South Boston Historic District reflects South Boston’s industrial, commercial, and residential development from the 19th century through the 1930s. Tobacco warehouses, factories, prizery buildings, and associated commercial and residential buildings remain from the heyday of the tobacco trade. This mix reveals several aspects of that development: production, commerce, and residential life all figure equally in the district’s built environment. Unlike the museum, whose themes also encompass Halifax County and Southside Virginia, the district focuses on South Boston’s development.

Trails and Outdoor Recreation

The Fire Hydrant Walking Tour is 1.63 miles long and features 18 fire hydrants painted by local artists. It combines these artistically decorated hydrants with an entertaining and educational walk. The nearly four-mile Tobacco Heritage Trail runs along the Dan River, making it longer; it can be used on horseback, by bicycle, or on foot. The trail begins at a parking lot near the remains of an old cotton mill. Route details and parking options may change.

Edmunds Park offers a children’s playground, scenic walking paths, and a Serenity Garden for relaxation. There are also six picnic shelters available for rent. Check whether a shelter you want is available before your trip; park facilities may also change.
