King George: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in King George
The 16-mile Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail follows the route of the Dahlgren Branch Rail Line from the 1940s and runs through King George County. The rail line gives the trail a clear historical connection and makes it a tangible destination for anyone who wants to explore King George on foot.
Trails and Landscapes
One important access point to the trail is the Bloomsbury Road Trailhead. It has parking and access to a gravel trail. Since access information can change, check the details before your visit.
In southeastern King George County, the Land’s End Wildlife Management Area covers 462 acres of open farmland, forest and wetlands. The area borders the Rappahannock River on two sides and Jett’s Creek on one. Wildlife viewing is its main recreational activity.
The Boyd’s Hole Trail in Caledon State Park also leads to the water: its destination is the Potomac River, and the trail is open year-round. Dahlgren Wayside Park offers a sandy beach, as well as opportunities for picnicking and birdwatching. These nature destinations include both trails that lead to a river and places for picnics and wildlife viewing.
Traces of History
The Native American Heritage Trail & GeoTour opened to the public in June 2024. It includes seven interpretive panels and ten geocaching puzzles. The combination of these two elements defines the trail’s format and offers different ways to engage with its theme.
Belle Grove Plantation is a Virginia Landmark and the birthplace of President James Madison. Booth and Herold crossed the Rappahannock River at the plantation site. The John Wilkes Booth Civil War Trail offers another perspective on the escape story: it is a 90-mile driving route along John Wilkes Booth’s escape route. Four markers in King George County mark the final stops on the trail before Booth was captured.
These two trails differ considerably in how you travel: the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail is 16 miles long, while the John Wilkes Booth Civil War Trail is a 90-mile driving tour. When planning your time, you can first decide whether to focus on a walking route or a longer drive.
Lamb’s Creek Church is currently inactive and is used only for an annual memorial service. If you are considering a visit, confirm the arrangements in advance. The King George County Museum is located in the old jail in the King George Courthouse complex. The Dahlgren Heritage Museum aims to preserve Dahlgren’s history through exhibits and special programs.
Local Highlights Throughout the Year
The King George Farmers’ Market offers produce, meat, fish, baked goods, plants, crafts and other local goods. The selection may vary by season. If the market is part of your travel plans, check the seasonal offerings in advance.
