Loudoun: Discover Historic Places and Trails
Accommodation in Loudoun
Historic homes and gardens, museums with unusual collections, and trails through varied landscapes give Loudoun many facets. When planning a trip, visitors can choose from nature experiences, local history, and recreational activities. Each destination has its own distinct focus.
Trails with Different Profiles
Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve covers 699 acres and offers 15 miles of hiking trails. A pond is designated for catch-and-release fishing. If you would like to fish there, it is worth checking the applicable licensing requirements in advance. The Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park, also known as the W&OD Trail, offers a paved, 45-mile route from Shirlington to Purcellville. Several parking lots make it possible to access or leave the trail at different points.
Running directly alongside the W&OD Trail is a separate, 32-mile gravel trail for horseback riders. These two figures describe different trails and uses. Oatlands also offers trails: 8.5 miles are available for hiking there. The estate also includes a 4.5-acre historic walled garden. Morven Park features a different landscape: its 1,000 acres include lawns, fields, a wooded ridge, and formal boxwood gardens. The grounds and gardens are open daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at no charge.
History at Historic Homes and Memorial Sites
Ball's Bluff Battlefield Regional Park combines history with a view of the Potomac River: the interpretive trail leads to a scenic overlook, and the park includes the third-smallest national cemetery in the United States. At Oatlands, you can visit the 1804 mansion. Tours, events, and educational programs share the estate’s history in different ways. The garden, trails, and mansion each offer a distinct focus for a visit.
Morven Park is also home to Davis Mansion. The building was constructed in the Greek Revival style; tours explore its fully furnished rooms and share the history of the Davis family. Dodona Manor offers public, paid tours led by volunteer docents. Visitors who would like to see the house from the outside can take a free, self-guided exterior tour. These options differ both in the type of visit and in whether a guided tour is included.
Museums Exploring Agriculture and Country Sports
The Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum offers an interactive look at agricultural topics: in the farm role-play experience, visitors can pick fruits and vegetables, collect artificial chicken eggs, and milk a life-size cow. Another exhibit explores 10,000 years of history through archaeological finds, including pottery shards, stone tools, and projectile points. Hands-on activities and insights into the area’s long history sit side by side.
The National Sporting Library & Museum is dedicated to country sports. Fishing, riding, foxhunting, horse racing, polo, and wildlife are among the topics visitors can explore through books, archives, and art collections. Its broad range brings together different sports and nature-related themes without focusing on a single activity.
Recreation and Local Orientation
Algonkian Regional Park offers an 18-hole golf course. The park is also home to Volcano Island Waterpark; its seasonal operating schedule may vary. When planning a visit, it is therefore worth checking the hours that apply during your travel dates. Special tastings, harvest dinners, and vineyard tours are also among the experiences offered in the county.
The landscape of Loudoun County includes vine-covered river valleys, fertile family farms, and historic places dating back to the 18th century. Historic sites and hikes on the Appalachian Trail, with views from Bear's Den Overlook, add to this picture. Loudoun's Trails and Waterways is Loudoun County’s interconnected trail system. Washington Dulles International Airport is located in the southeastern part of the county.
