The Green Springs Historic District offers a concrete introduction to the landscape of Louisa County: the geological basin covers 14,000 acres and is characterized by lush, rolling pastures. The district’s farms, buildings and families represent many generations of agricultural, architectural and social history.

Landscape, Trails and History

The area of the Green Springs National Historic District near Bracketts Farm is home to short-eared owls, rusty blackbirds and larks. A 1.6-mile loop Nature and Heritage Trail runs near Nolting Pond on Bracketts Farm. The farm is also part of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ Wildlife and Birding Trail program.

Trevilian Station Battlefield Park also offers space for outdoor activities, with more than eight miles of wooded trails for hiking and horseback riding. The Trevilian Battlefield Station Trail is open to hikers and horseback riders; bicycles and motorized vehicles are prohibited. Another way to visit is the Trevilian Station Battlefield Tour, a self-guided driving tour with twelve stops and audio segments about historic events.

Museums and Historical Insights

The Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History presents the county’s history in six permanent exhibits. Their subjects range from Indigenous peoples and the American Revolution to the Civil War, education, transportation and government. This brings different chapters of the county’s history together rather than focusing on just one era.

Behind the museum is Heritage Farm, a living history site offering open-hearth cooking workshops and free family days. The grounds include Michie House and Smoke House, which were relocated and restored in 2013, as well as Trevilians Schoolhouse, which was relocated and restored in 2017. Throughout the year, the Louisa County Historical Society holds seasonal workshops on wreath-making, basket-weaving and other historic crafts.

The self-guided Town of Louisa Tour visits homes, office buildings and churches dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. For a different perspective on local history, take the Trevilian Station Battlefield Tour, with its twelve stops and audio segments about historic events.
