Mecklenburg County: Nature and History
Accommodation in Mecklenburg County
Mecklenburg County brings together travel interests centered on water and nature with historic sites. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide which themes will shape your trip. You can then compare specific hotel addresses with the destinations you plan to visit.
Water Landscapes and Activities
The John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir, also known as Buggs Island Lake, covers 50,000 acres and stretches 39 miles up the Roanoke River. Its 800-mile shoreline is wooded and dotted with coves; the reservoir lies in Virginia and North Carolina. Fishing is possible at the reservoir. From Richmond, it can be reached via I-95, I-85, US 58, and VA 4.
At Tailrace Park below Kerr Dam, you can watch waterfowl and bald eagles year-round. This adds a nature-focused element to water activities that isn’t limited to a particular season.
North Bend Park and Nature Trails
North Bend Park has more than 200 campsites for tents or RVs and three boat ramps. It also has a paved, 1.5-mile bicycle trail. If you’d like to plan a hike, the 1.5-mile Liberty Nature Trail is a short drive from the campground at North Bend Park. The trails offer two different ways to spend time outdoors: cycling on the bike trail or walking the nature trail.
Historic Sites and Their Stories
In South Hill, the Commercial Historic District illustrates the tobacco and railroad economy around the turn of the 20th century through its tobacco warehouses and commercial buildings along West Danville Street and Mecklenburg Avenue. Many of the district’s buildings and properties are visible from public roads. In Boydton, the Historic District tells a different story: it is considered one of the best-preserved small county seats in Virginia. There, too, many buildings and properties can be seen from public roads.
Boyd Tavern was built in the 18th century and served as a center of social and political activity in Boydton for more than 200 years. In the Clarksville Historic District, Virginia Avenue has long been the main thoroughfare. These places offer different perspectives on the past, from local economic life to political and social history.
Prestwould was completed in 1795 as a grand Georgian mansion and was the centerpiece of a 10,000-acre plantation. Its formal garden is one of Virginia’s most comprehensively documented historic gardens. The estate also includes a late-18th-century slave house, considered the oldest known surviving slave house in Virginia and possibly in the southern United States. The Prestwould Foundation presents the estate to the public and is working over the long term to restore its many components.
For more regional history, the MacCallum More Museum & Gardens preserves artifacts and the history of the region. The Thyne Institute Memorial is Site No. 36 on the Civil Rights in Education Heritage Trail. These destinations complement the architecture and economic history of the historic districts with museum and education history.
