For your planning, Luray offers several areas of interest: caves, collections, historic scenes and outdoor trails. The attractions vary in focus and can be grouped according to whether you are interested in nature, sound, history or activity.

Caves, Sound and Designed Trails

Luray Caverns offers tours along well-lit, paved paths and is designated a “Registered Natural Landmark.” This combines its designation as a natural landmark with a clearly defined tour format. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is the largest musical instrument in the world.

Another sound-related attraction is the Luray Singing Tower, officially called the Belle Brown Northcott Memorial: it contains a carillon of 47 cast bells. Recitals are regularly scheduled in spring, summer and fall at the Luray Carillon Singing Tower. Since the dates are seasonal, it is worth checking the schedule before your visit.

The Garden Maze covers one acre. More than 1,500 evergreen hedges form a path about half a mile long. The area and path length convey two different measures of the attraction: its size and the length of the route through the maze.

Museums and Historic Scenes

The Car & Carriage Caravan Museum displays more than 140 transportation-related objects, including 50 motorized vehicles. The collection therefore includes both vehicles and other items related to transportation. Anyone particularly interested in the development of motorized transport will find a clearly quantified area of focus within the larger collection.

Shenandoah Heritage Village is a seven-acre reconstruction of a small 19th-century agricultural community. The Luray Valley Museum takes a different historical approach: it displays artifacts and their history from the 1750s through the 1920s. While the Village reconstructs a 19th-century community, the period covered by the museum spans several decades before and after it.

Toy Town Junction also draws on historical and narrative themes. On display are scenes featuring a pirate ship, a medieval castle and an early-20th-century farm. The three depictions move from an adventure setting to a medieval theme and then to a more recent agricultural scene.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Luray-Hawksbill Greenway offers a two-mile paved trail for walking and cycling. Fishing is permitted at Cave Pond on a catch-and-release basis; a path also runs around the pond. This location therefore offers both fishing with the catch released and a waterside route.

You can access the Hawksbill Trail at any point along the route. This differs from an access arrangement with just one designated starting point.

The Stonyman Mining Company Gem Sluice offers an interactive introduction to the prospecting work of early gold and gemstone seekers. At the Rope Adventure Park, options include the low-to-the-ground Little Adventurer course, as well as challenges such as climbing and belaying (“on belay”). Weather and operating hours may change; check both before your visit.

Hiking Beyond Luray

Shenandoah National Park is also a regional destination for hiking: visitors can reach it from Luray and Page County for day hikes and overnight hikes on more than 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Compared with the two-mile Luray-Hawksbill Greenway, these offer different scales: a local route for walking and cycling on the one hand, and a much more extensive regional trail network on the other.

When planning your trip, you can choose among several specific themes: guided cave visits, museums and reconstructed scenes, trails in town or hikes in the national park. For seasonal recitals and at the Rope Adventure Park, it is worth checking the listed dates and operating hours in advance.
