Accommodation in Prince George
Prince George brings together a riverside landscape, natural areas, local culture, and U.S. history. Prince George County is located on the Appomattox River and along I-95, 30 miles south of Richmond. Outdoor offerings range from wooded trails and an observation pier to an expansive wildlife refuge. There are also historic sites, museums, and recreational activities with a wide variety of focuses. You can plan your trip around whether you want to spend time in nature, explore history, or enjoy a mix of activities.
River and Nature Trails
Appomattox River Regional Park offers more than 67 acres of wooded trails. An observation pier is located on the Appomattox River. You can also rent kayaks at the park on a self-service basis through the Rent.Fun mobile app. As program details may change, please check them before your visit.
The James River National Wildlife Refuge covers 4,800 acres and encompasses a range of habitats: pine-dominated forests, moist hardwood and bottomland forests, freshwater marshes and shrub swamps, aquatic habitats, erosion bluffs, and non-forested uplands. The refuge was established in 1991 to protect bald eagles and other species of special concern. The newly expanded Powell Creek Nature Trail is open year-round from sunrise to sunset and is 1.5 miles long. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.
For a different trail length, the Eastern Front Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield offers about ten miles of nature trails for hiking, running, and biking. By comparison, the 1.5-mile Powell Creek Nature Trail is a considerably shorter individual trail option. The figure of about ten miles describes the trails in the Eastern Front Unit as a whole and offers a point of reference for a different scale of trail offerings.
History Across Widely Separated Eras
Flowerdew Hundred Plantation represents several layers of history. The plantation was one of the earliest English settlements in the New World. Around 1621, the first documented windmill in North America was built at Windmill Point. The site includes a complex of early 17th-century structures and evidence of Indigenous settlement dating to around 9000 BC. These dates span from very early traces of settlement to the colonial period, offering different perspectives on the site’s past.
Brandon is a historic plantation on the south bank of the James River in Prince George County, Virginia. It encompasses 4,500 acres of the original 7,000 acres patented by Captain John Martin (1562–1632) in 1616. The acreage figures and patent year provide a specific connection to the county’s early history.
Museums and Cultural Traditions
The U.S. Army Women’s Museum honors women’s contributions to the U.S. Army from 1775 to the present. Admission, tours, programs, and the museum’s research library are free. The U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum focuses on a different subject: preserving the history and heritage of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. Together, the two museums explore different aspects of military history—women’s contributions on the one hand and the history of the Corps on the other.
The Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival celebrates the cultural heritage of immigrant families from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, and other Eastern European countries who settled in Prince George County. Its focus is a local tradition that encompasses several countries of origin and the history of the families who settled there.
Recreational Activities with Different Focuses
There are also a variety of outdoor activities to choose from. Tree Time Adventures is an elevated outdoor obstacle course and treetop experience featuring eight ziplines.
