Castle Rock, Washington, combines a historic downtown with trails, cultural events and nature destinations in the region. When planning your stay, you can distinguish between options in the center and broader nature experiences: Castle Rock Walk takes you through downtown, while Seaquest State Park and destinations at Mount St. Helens are regional highlights. This lets you plan your trip around the activities you want to include.

Trails and Activities in Castle Rock

The Riverfront Trail is a 1.7-mile, lighted, paved multi-use trail. It runs north from Lion’s Pride Park to the Castle Rock Sports Complex; sections of the trail lie on both sides of the Cowlitz River. If you plan to use the trail, check local conditions before your visit.

The Bike Skills Park offers a different kind of activity. Its various skills and practice features range from beginner to advanced. The park is limited to bicycles and trail bikes. The main difference between the two options is their character: the Riverfront Trail is a paved multi-use trail, while the Skills Park focuses on practice features for cyclists.

Downtown, Walking Tour and Seasonal Events

The historic downtown has a wide selection of shops, antique stores, restaurants and accommodations. Individual businesses may change. Castle Rock Walk is a self-guided historical and floral walking tour through the center of Castle Rock. Check the route details locally when planning your walk.

Plantings also shape the townscape: since 2011, an award-winning, volunteer-led flower program has adorned the streets with lush hanging baskets, planters outside businesses and garden beds. Seasonal floral displays may vary. The cultural calendar includes two recurring events: the Castle Rock Fair takes place annually in July, and the Festival of Lights annually in December. Specific event dates may vary.

In 2026, the Castle Rock Sunday Market takes place weather permitting every Sunday from May through October, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Haircut Express in Castle Rock. Offerings include food, produce, handmade goods, plants and antiques. The seasonal schedule and weather contingency are relevant when planning.

Nature Destinations in the Region

Castle Rock is a gateway to the north entrance of Mount St. Helens via State Route 504. Road conditions may vary; check them before setting out. At the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center, you can explore Silver Lake on a 0.6-mile trail with boardwalks over the wetland. Depending on the season, you may see aquatic plants and migratory birds.

Seaquest State Park offers another connection to the region’s natural surroundings. A pedestrian tunnel connects the park to the Mount St. Helens Interpretive Center and Silver Lake. The park has more than 12 miles of hiking trails; conditions may change seasonally. Silver Lake is a shallow wetland lake home to numerous bird and wildlife species. The regional options therefore include both longer hiking trails and a short trail with boardwalks for exploring the wetland.

Access to the Cowlitz River

The Al Helenberg Memorial Boat Launch provides access to the Cowlitz River for motorized and non-motorized boats, as well as kayaks. Parking is available. This option is distinct from the trails: it provides access to the water, while the Riverfront Trail and Silver Lake attractions are explored on foot.
