Okanogan is located on the Okanogan River. The city offers several distinct themes to consider when choosing a place to stay: a courthouse built in 1915 that still stands, the stories of the Okanogan County Historical Museum, art by Frank Matsura, and trails along the riverbank. Each of the following places and trails offers a different focus. For orientation, these interests can be broadly divided into two categories: cultural history and art on the one hand, and nature and parks on the other.

City History Between Courthouse and Museum

The Okanogan courthouse was built in 1915 and still stands today. It provides a tangible architectural reference point for the city’s history. The Okanogan County Historical Museum tells a much longer story, spanning from early geological times to the present. Dioramas, models, photographs, and relics bring this time span to life in different ways—as scenes, images, and historical objects. The replica of the Old Okanogan Fire Station offers a more specific focus. It includes a historic fire engine and other period artifacts. These historical attractions can therefore be distinguished by their scale: a single courthouse that still stands, a recreated fire station, and the museum’s broad sweep of time.

Frank Matsura in Pictures

Frank Matsura’s work appears in Okanogan in two forms. His murals can be seen throughout the city. The Frank Matsura Photographic Walking Trail features the artist’s large-format photographs from the early 20th century on a walk through Okanogan. The murals are spread throughout the city, while the named trail offers a walk focused on photography. Both the courthouse and the photographs refer to the early 20th century, but with different levels of specificity: the building is dated to 1915, while the images come from a broader period.

Trails and Parks

The Island Park Trail runs through a riverside nature preserve with native birds and plants and can be used for hiking year-round. The Conservancy Island Trail is 1.4 miles long. These offer different criteria for choosing: the Island Park Trail stands out for its natural setting and year-round hiking access, while the Conservancy Island Trail has a specified distance. You can decide whether the landscape and season of use or a stated distance matters more to you. The riverside area includes woodland and pastureland.

A footpath connects River Access Park with Alma Park. If you plan to visit both parks in one day, this connection is a practical point of reference. One park in Okanogan also has baseball, softball, and soccer fields. Alongside the connection between the parks, this offers a clear option for sports and recreation.
