Index – Climbing, River Landscapes and History
Accommodation in Index
Index lies at the confluence of the North Fork and South Fork of the Skykomish River. For orientation, the town is one mile north of State Highway 2 at milepost 35. Climbing at the Town Wall, scenic trails and local history give a stay in Index a range of different focal points.
Climbing at the Town Wall
The Stimson Bullitt Climbing Preserve is next to Index and offers climbing on the rock formations of the Town Wall. The Index Town Wall has more than 600 climbing routes; only a few are below grade 5.10. The number of routes may change over time. The climbing season lasts nearly all year, with wetter conditions in December and January. On March 13, 2026, Washington State Parks announced that it had agreed to manage the Lower Town Wall near Index as a climbing park and permanently maintain public access for climbing there.
A trail east of the Town Wall climbing area leads to the Upper Town Wall. From there, you can see Mount Index and the town of Index. This connects orientation around the climbing area with a specific named viewpoint, without specifying a hiking time or difficulty level.
Trails, River and Views
Access to Heybrook Ridge is via the Heybrook County Park Trailhead, which is across the Skykomish River from downtown Index. Nearby Heybrook Ridge County Park has a trailhead with an accessible parking space and a portable toilet. The trail up Heybrook Ridge covers 1.5 miles with 700 feet of elevation gain to a viewpoint.
The Crescent Trail runs through the forest from the town of Index to an unofficial town park on the banks of the North Fork of the Skykomish River. The two trails have different focal points: at Heybrook Ridge, elevation gain and a viewpoint serve as landmarks; on the Crescent Trail, the route through the forest from Index and its destination on the riverbank shape the hike.
At the River House in Index, Outdoor Adventures rents whitewater and inflatable kayaks, e-bikes and rafts. Reservations are subject to availability. The River House is also the meeting point for a rafting trip on the North Fork of the Skykomish River; seasonal availability varies. Both rental options and a river-related meeting point are therefore among the activities described in the area.
