Historic names and remembrances

Company C was stationed in Centerville, now Rock Cave. A section of West Virginia Route 20 between Rock Cave and the Webster County line was named the “Upshur Civil War Company C Militia Memorial Highway” after a dedication ceremony at the intersection with Route 4 in 2013. The road’s name and the Veterans Memorial represent different forms of local remembrance: the road name refers to Company C, while the memorial at the “Y” honors Rock Cave community members who served in the armed forces.

The history of the Groundhog Festival is also tied to a specific date: in 2020, Rock Cave hosted its fifth annual weeklong festival. The opening included a potluck meal featuring “critter stew” at the Banks District Volunteer Fire Department.
