Discover Waupaca
Accommodation in Waupaca
To decide whether Waupaca is right for your stay, its history, architecture, and landscape offer different points of reference. Historic buildings and exhibits are the focus in downtown; farther afield, trails and a stretch of the Crystal River shape the nature experience. This can help you assess the destination based on whether you are more interested in local history, architecture, or a river route.
History and Architecture
The Waupaca Historical Society is located in downtown Waupaca on Main Street. It works to preserve the history of Waupaca and the Chain O'Lakes and to share it with the public. Its work thus connects local history with topics related to the lakes region.
Built in Waupaca in 1854, the Hutchinson House is a well-preserved example of New England-style architecture. Tours of the Hutchinson House Museum let you see the Victorian home and its household furnishings, clothing, glassware, and textiles. Many of the artifacts are associated with early settlers of Waupaca County. The construction date and architectural style give the house a specific architectural focus; the displayed objects add a glimpse of household culture and the early settlers. Check the seasonal visitor information when planning your visit.
Behind the Hutchinson House Museum in South Park is King Cottage. Exhibits there tell the story of the Chain O'Lakes, including Whispering Pines Park, as well as the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. The cottage complements the Hutchinson House's topics with further aspects of the history of the lakes region and community.
Depot and River Ridge Trail
The historic Waupaca Depot is one of four historic buildings that the Waupaca Historical Society preserves and operates within the City of Waupaca. Its basement houses a G-scale model railroad. It depicts historic sites in the Waupaca area and the Chain O'Lakes. While the depot itself is a single historic building, the model depicts several nearby sites.
The River Ridge Trail runs along Oak Street, past the Waupaca Depot. In the wider region, the Waupaca River Ridge Trail is part of a non-motorized trail network that runs through the Waupaca area. The River Ridge Trail lies in the transition zone between Wisconsin's northern and southern ecoregions, an area with unique biodiversity. The trail offers both a specific route past the depot and a broader natural setting to explore.
River Landscape and Seasonal Activities
For a paddling trip, the second stretch of the Crystal River is a specific option: the five-mile route runs either from Nelson Park or from George and Louise Woods Memorial Park to the boat landing at Shadow Lake in Waupaca. Both launch points lead to the same endpoint, so you can compare them when planning. The stretch winds through rural scenery, with many bends and curves, and is home to wildlife. Since water conditions can vary, check them before paddling.
Swimming lessons are held at South Park Beach in summer, with sessions in June and July. This seasonal activity offers another way to enjoy the outdoors during your stay. Together with the River Ridge Trail and the paddling route on the Crystal River, it shows different ways to include Waupaca's landscape and waterways in your travel plans.
