Elk Mountain: Local History and Excursions
Accommodation in Elk Mountain
Elk Mountain combines local history with a short walking tour and outdoor activities. For planning your trip, the scale is a useful distinction: a walk around town takes you to original buildings, while Pass Creek Road offers a scenic drive in the wider region. Elk Mountain is about 3 miles south of Interstate 80 and on the Medicine Bow River.
Local History in Buildings and Memorials
The Elk Mountain Hotel was built in 1905 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The dates mark two different milestones: 1905 is the year it was built, and 1986 is the year it was added to the register. Reservation details may change; check them before your visit.
The nondenominational church in Elk Mountain was also built in 1905. The Garden Spot Pavilion represents another part of the town’s history: performers there included Louis Armstrong, Lawrence Welk, Hank Thompson, Jim Reeves, and Tommy Dorsey. The Pavilion is no longer an active venue. The hotel and church thus represent buildings from 1905, while the Pavilion recalls earlier musical performances.
The sauna points to another side of the town’s history: on Saturday evenings, it was regularly visited by timber workers, ranchers, haying helpers, and residents. This past use differs from the performances at the Garden Spot Pavilion; here, the focus is on a recurring custom shared by different groups.
Walking Tour and Getting Oriented in Town
The walking tour of Elk Mountain is a short walk down Bridge Street and across the bridge to some of the town’s original buildings. It offers a direct way to explore the town’s architectural history: the route connects the street and the bridge crossing with the buildings at its destination.
The Overland Trail marker is on the hill above Elk Mountain, along County Road 3. Road conditions may vary; keep this in mind when including the marker in your plans.
Fishing, Parks, and a Drive in the Surrounding Area
Trout fishing is possible right in the town center, and conditions are seasonal. Centennial Park has a playground for children. These offerings have different planning considerations: fishing depends on the season, while park facilities may change. If needed, check current fishing conditions and the status of the facilities before your visit.
In the wider region around Elk Mountain, Pass Creek Road offers a scenic drive around the mountain, with impressive views and abundant wildlife. Road conditions and seasonal access may vary; check conditions before planning your drive. Unlike a walk around town, this is a regional drive focused on views and wildlife.
