Sheopur combines nature-related attractions around Kuno with historic forts, religious sites and regional cuisine. If you are looking for a hotel, it is best to first decide which of these aspects of the destination will shape your trip. The places and themes below provide a concrete guide.

Landscape and nature around Kuno

The administrative center of Sheopur district lies on the right bank of the Seep River. The Kuno sanctuary is located in the northern part of the Vindhyachal Range in Sheopur district. Kuno National Park covers 344.686 square kilometers and is named after the Kuno, a tributary of the Chambal. Riverbanks, mountains and the protected area thus mark different landscape features of the region.

Dev-Khau is also one of the district’s natural sites: it is in Karahal, an extensive area surrounded on all sides by mountains and forests. In Kuno National Park, visitors exploring the jungle may see chital, sambar deer, nilgai and hyenas, as well as numerous bird and reptile species. September 2022 marks a distinct milestone in conservation history: that month, twelve cheetahs were brought from South Africa to Kuno as part of the Cheetah Project.

There is a seasonal restriction to bear in mind when planning a visit to the national park. Under the forest administration’s guidelines, tourism is restricted to the period outside the monsoon season. Check current conditions before your visit. Sesaipura in Sheopur district is the nearest village to Kuno National Park, 15 kilometers from the park.

Forts and historical traces

Sheopur Fort stands at the confluence of the Sep and Kalval rivers. A Jain pillar edict dated to 1026 AD is cited as evidence of the fort’s existence. Within the fort, the Sahariya Museum was established to protect the culture of the Sahriya tribe; it also serves as a research center for Sahariya culture. This site thus connects an early historical trace with a designated cultural and scholarly purpose.

Shish Mahal, Hawa Mahal and Shankar Mahal can be seen in Baroda Fort. Its historical background differs from that of Sheopur: King Indra Singh Gaur conquered the fort, which subsequently became part of the princely state of Shiyopur. Manpur Fort, in turn, was built by Raja Mansingh. Depictions of the Maneshwar-Mahadev Temple can be found there. The fort is 45 kilometers from Sheopur.

Dob Kund also offers specific historical and religious points of interest: the ruins of two ancient temples have been discovered there. One of the ruins is dedicated to Jain deities of the Digambara sect; a 59-line inscription is also carved into a pillar.

Religious sites and local culture

Triveni Sangam is the sacred confluence of the Sip, Chambal and Banas rivers. The Lakshminath Temple can be seen at the Sangam. Sheopur’s Gangaur festival is celebrated in honor of Shiva and Parvati. These religious landmarks take different forms: one is a confluence with a visible temple, while the other is a festival with a specifically named dedication.

Dal Bati Churma is part of the district’s culinary identity. This traditional dish is common in both rural and urban areas of Sheopur and became part of the district’s cultural identity through the “One District, One Cuisine” initiative. Dal Bati, also known as Bafla, is available at most restaurants and hotels in Sheopur. Wood carving has also become a highly developed art form in the district.

Getting there and finding your way

Sheopur is connected by regular bus services to Gwalior, Morena, Shivpuri and Kota. Check the relevant schedules for your journey. The distances to Manpur Fort and Sesaipura help you locate two different points of reference: the first is measured from Sheopur, while the second is measured from Kuno National Park. Together with the nature and cultural themes, this information can help you decide in advance which places are most relevant to your travel plans.
