Vellore Between Fort, Temples and Nature
Accommodation in Vellore
Vellore can be explored through a range of highlights: a granite fort with several museums, temple architecture ranging from a cave temple to an elaborate gold covering, and natural destinations featuring forests, water and seasonal waterfalls. When planning your visit, it is worth considering these themes separately: architecture and history converge at the fort, while the temples, science centre and landscapes each offer a different perspective on Vellore.
Vellore Fort: Granite Construction and History
The rectangular Vellore Fort was built between 1526 and 1595 by Bommu Nayakar and his brother. It has a circumference of 3 km and was built entirely of solid, hewn granite. Its history of events is also part of the place: in 1806, the first uprising against the British in India broke out in the fort, known as Sippoy Kalagam. The fort’s design, materials and historical significance reveal several facets that come together when viewing the complex.
The Government Museum Vellore is located on the grounds of the historic fort. Its artefacts are significant in art history, archaeology, anthropology, geology, botany and zoology; the museum has eight galleries. This brings together a range of fields, from art and archaeology to natural history. The Archaeological Survey of India Museum is housed in the fort’s Badhusha Mahal and Begum Mahal—that is, in two named palace buildings within the complex.
Temple Art and Architectural Styles
At the Golden Temple - Sripuram, the expansive grounds are paired with finely detailed craftsmanship: the temple occupies a 100-acre site and has a 1,500 kg gold covering. Skilled artisans specialising in gold temple art crafted it elaborately. Every detail was made by hand: gold bars were turned into gold foil, which was then applied to copper.
Other temples have their own architectural features. Vallimalai Murugan Temple is a rock-cut cave temple on a small hill; 444 steps lead up to it. Vilvatheeswarar Temple has a five-storey Rajagopuram and a three-storey shrine. The temple tower at Margabandeeshwarar Temple is about 110 feet tall. It also has a sundial that tells the time. These details offer different perspectives on temple architecture, from a space carved into rock to towers, shrines and sundials.
In Melpadi, stone inscriptions tell the stories of Rajaraja-I, Rajaraja-II, Koperunsingan, the Sambuvarayargal and the kings of Vijaya Nagar. The area is also known for its architecture and sculpture: Arinjaya Choleeshwaran is a Pallipadai temple built above the burial site of Arinjaya Cholan. The statues of the Seven Mothers and other statues at Somanathar Temple are considered examples of the sculpture found in Melpadi. The Gangai Amman Sirasu Festival takes place in Gudiyatham and is one of the major festivals in Vellore District.
Science and Nature as Further Highlights
The Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi District Science Centre offers a different experience from the historic sites. Its four galleries include the Invention Gallery, Physical Science Gallery, Environment Gallery and Industrial Gallery. The 3D Science Hall offers experiences related to astronomy, space travel, medicine, genetics, spacecraft and 3D science films. A small planetarium is intended for school groups and the general public, where visitors can watch a space film.
The natural destinations also vary in focus. The Amirthi Forests are rich in flora and fauna; part of the jungle has been developed as a wildlife sanctuary. At Amirthi Zoological Park, a 1 km trek leads to a viewpoint with a full view of the seasonal waterfalls.
Morthana Dam offers a different perspective on the landscape: it is about 30 feet deep and covers an area of 100 hectares. During the monsoon, rainwater from the forests of Karnataka and Andhra flows into the dam through the Koundiya River. The structure can therefore also be viewed in the context of seasonal water flow. Katpadi Junction is the main railway hub for getting around Vellore by train.
