Discover Prigglitz: Art, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Prigglitz
Prigglitz lies high above the Schwarzatal on a sunny terrace above the sea of fog. When planning your trip, you can focus on various themes: landscape, art, archaeological history and outdoor activities. At the heart of Prigglitz is the three-aisled Church of St. Nicholas. If you are looking for a hotel in Prigglitz, you can first consider which of these interests you would like to shape your stay.
Landscape and tours
The WAB Regional Route K reaches Prigglitz via forest paths that lead over the Silbersberg. Shortly before Prigglitz, it offers a view across the cultural landscape of Prigglitz as far as the Rax. Nearby is the Pottschacher HĂĽtte at an altitude of 914 metres; it can be reached on foot from Prigglitz in about an hour. Route K thus combines forest paths with views across the landscape, while the hike to the hut gives you an approximate walking time.
Another type of tour is the Chapel Circuit, a mountain bike tour starting at the primary school in Prigglitz. The Maagraben Cave is along the route. The different landmarks are clear: the Chapel Circuit is defined by its starting point and the cave along the route, while the WAB Route is defined by the forest paths over the Silbersberg and the views as far as the Rax.
Art and events
The cultural offerings encompass various forms: gallery exhibitions, outdoor installations, works on meadows and a concert walk. Galerie Gut Gasteil presents four exhibitions of contemporary art each year. The “Art in the Landscape” exhibition series at Gut Gasteil is organised every two years and features changing outdoor installations. On the 16-hectare meadows around Gut Gasteil, the sculptor couple Seidl presents works by international artists.
“Prigglitz prickelt” is a concert walk featuring music at various locations. This format combines a walk with music in different places, making it distinct from gallery exhibitions and outdoor installations.
Archaeology and buildings
Copper was mined and processed in Prigglitz-Gasteil around 3,000 years ago. Mounds and terrain terraces up to 15 metres wide are still visible on the surface at the Late Bronze Age mining settlement. Prigglitz is home to the best-researched prehistoric mining site in Lower Austria. For those interested in archaeology, the approximate date of the mining activity and the landforms still visible today go hand in hand.
The buildings also differ in their location and form. The Church of St. Nicholas stands on a churchyard plateau that slopes gently to the southeast, in the heart of Prigglitz, and has three aisles. The Patricius Chapel in Gasteil is a Baroque wayside chapel. The location and layout of the church, on the one hand, and the chapel’s Baroque style, on the other, thus offer distinct architectural points of interest.
